Title: Mossberg 835 choke
Post by: WNCTracker on April 15, 2015, 05:51:18 PM
Currently using IC BDS .75. Anybody have an opinion of a tighter patterning choke at 40 yds using 3.5" Longbeard #5's with a mossberg 835?

Most 835's shoot their best with chokes in the .670 to .680 range.  Your 835 should shoot the Longbeard 5's and IC .675 with GREAT results.  What are your results with the 5's and what are you looking for?

I tested a 24" Moss. 935 this year with a IC .675 and the 3.5 LB 5's. After dialing it in I shot 2 patterns, 190 and 201 in the 10" @ 40. The majority of the pattern is in the 10 with not much coverage from 10 to 20". Have you tested it at 15 to 20 yards? I have, pattern about the size of softball. Numbers and super tight patterns are cool on paper, but not always the best thing in the woods. What kind of pattern and numbers are you shooting with your gun?

140-195 at 35 yds. Slightly inconsistent. It kills just wondering about the 40+ yd range

I was recommended the ssx choke by Clark and put 168 in the 10 at probably 35-37 yards with long beard 4's.

I'm using the factory ultimag choke that come with my 935 with the win Longbeard 3.5" 6 shot. I shot today and would post a pic but it's too big and I've cropped it as far as I could go. I know your using the 835 nothing different other than mines a auto but you might want try the factory choke. I'm puttin 70 to 80 pellets in head and neck at 40 yards.

I shoot a 20 in Mossberg 835 with an IC BDS in .675  I shoot the LB 3" #6 and have great results at 40 and 50 yards. I shot these patterns a few weeks ago.  The first group is at 40 and then 50.

I shoot the mossy with a 24" barrel,LB #6s 3.5" with a ssx choke and at 40 yds I consistently get 250 260 in a 10" circle.and of course I polished my barrel to a mirror finish which does make a difference in my 835.

That's 240 hits 47 degrees and raining, I don't
Know how you feel about buying mag blends, but
You might give them a try and that was
A dirty barrel.  Good luck on whatever you decide!!!!

i've never seen a .665 for an 835?  Is there one?  Also, with the 240 hits, what mag blends are you using?

There are several good chokes to use in the 835/935 but in my evaluations both with WLB shells and Hevi-13 shells the Hevi-13 choke and the SSX were outstanding with good numbers and no 2" or larger gaps in the patterns. Both those evaluations were conducted in the low to mid 50s and I'd expect to see even better numbers as temperatures rise.

Thanks,
Clark

I shoot the 835 with Hevi 7's though a .670 Pure Gold also (300 plus at 40).  I will be experimenting with the 5 and 6 LB's when my stash of 7's run out.  I've got 3 boxes of each on hand to run though the Pure Gold, a .675 IC and a .676 Stardot.

I was able to shoot 3 longbeard 5'5 a while back and was absolutely amazed at the pattern I got with Mossbergs x-factor choke. I also shot the hevi13 choke as well but it did not perform as well as the x- factor. Maybe those shells like the 695 constriction more than the 676. I don't have the answer but I think that these shells may allow a guy to buy a cheaper choke like an Undertaker and have all the pattern they need.
