Title: Weekend road trip
Post by: FullChoke on March 25, 2011, 01:24:28 PM
I'll be heading out this afternoon to hunt a friends family place in Alabama as well as one of their newly acquired 1,700 acre creek bottom properties in north Mississippi. He claims that the MS property has areas that are absolutely filthy with turkey tracks in the roads.

Either place is a goldmine.

Y'all be safe and hunt well!

Fun weekend, but nothing for the kill board. Saturday we went to their new property, great place, heard 3 birds but were all across deep canals that cut through the place. Still need to really learn where to hunt this tract.

Sunday we hunted the home place in Alabama. I set up on a big powerline and he went to a creek on the place. I had one gobbling in the pines directly across from me that I later found out was on a green field in the woods. Just wouldn't come out to the powerline. My buddy would up calling up and killing his first turkey entirely on his own and IT WAS A STUD HOSS!
18.3 lbs, 1.375" spurs (1 was broken off to 1") and dragging an 11.5" cruise ship mooring line of a beard! He called two longbeards up and told me that he had to settle for this one. He said that the other bird was considerably larger than the one he shot.  :o He made a great move on the birds and killed this one cleanly with a 45 yard shot. I have been teaching him how to hunt turkeys and it looks like it has taken.

Congrats to your buddy.

Sounds like a fun weekend, even though you didn't get to pull the trigger.
