Hey folks,
I've got an 870 express tactical sitting around collecting dust and would like to get another barrel so I can bring it into the woods. I've done some searching, but before making a purchase, I'd to check with yall to make sure I'm not missing out on a better deal or setup.

If you know of somewhere I can get this, or a better barrel for cheaper, I'd greatly appreciate you pointing me in that direction! Any other tips/ideas for a good 870 setup are also appreciated!

Should work fine. I prefer a longer barrel but only you can make that call. Check Ebay as well, I have been looking at 1100 barrels on there. Also check Midwayusa.com

It'll work fine. Remington barrels are hit and miss around turkey season but look around you might find a better deal.
Many times Mann & Son Sporting Goods has new/used 870 barrels. I've got a 21" with truglo sights I may be willing to part with. Probably only a box or two shot through it and I've deep cleaned. Quit shooting 870 and I don't really need it anymore

This is the best patterning barrel Remington has ever made for an 870 period. Hands down. No questions asked.

You may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere but Midway always ship really quickly.
I ordered the Carlsons 24" barrel from Cabelas that come with a modified choke in it for $169.99. It has patterned everything great so far. Only tried 2 choke tightwad & jellyhead and the tightwad is the hands down winner. I am getting 140 3" #4 longboards in 10" @ 40 and 161 in 10" with mag lends plus a nice forgiving halo around the circle. I got the longer barrel because I didn't want the muzzle blast causing me to not hear a gobbler the rest of the day.

Thanks Clark! I spent a little time on your site yesterday evening and enjoyed reading some of your articles. The barrel cleaning article was pretty informative! You seem pretty knowledgeable when it comes to shotguns, so if you don't mind, I'd love to ask you some questions.
Do you have any tips or advice for firing a brand new 835? I'll be picking it up tomorrow and heading straight to the range for patterning, should I clean it first?
I picked up two boxes of shells yesterday. One box of Longbeard XR - 3" #5 and one box of Longbeard XR - 3 1/2" #6 2oz. People seem to be getting great patterns with these shells out of their 835s, but I'd like to know if you've had them pattern well with the Moss. X-factor choke that comes with the gun? I'm also considering picking up an SSX, but will wait to see the patterns I'm getting from the X-factor before making a decision.
How is the TruGlo red dot that comes with this gun? Any thoughts or tips on sighting?

Hey John,
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you found the articles interesting.
I would strongly encourage you to deep clean the bore of your new 835 before you shoot it. Shooting will "cook in" any of the gunk that's in the bore and affect your patterns. It's much more easily removed before you shoot it.
The X-Factor choke is not bad at all. In my evaluation for
Turkey Country magazine it put 147 hits in the 10" circle with no 2" or larger gaps and had a decent halo pattern out to 16" or so. All those shots were taken in the low to medium 50s so you can expect better at higher temperatures. All were fired from my 835 with a 28" barrel and with 3" WLB shells with 1.75 oz. of #6 shot.
To give you some comparisons, the Hevi-13 choke put 220 and the SSX 186 but all of them had even coverage. I'd encourage you to try that X-Factor, it may be all that you ever need. Sometimes a shorter barrelled gun will need a somewhat tighter choke but it's always best to try what you have first.
I shoot "dot" sights at big paper with a mark in the center, from a solid rest, at 25 yards and then move the dot to the place I hit. Shoot again to verify and then move out to 40 yards. It should not change but it's always good to verify.
