Well boys I had another rough run with the birds today..Me and my buddy went back to that spot where the camera is and setup around 2:30. We sat there and didn't make a sound till 4. I make 1 cadence of calls, then just sat there for 45 mins. Then out of nowhere we hear a gobble. we both were trying to figure out where it came from when boom he gobbles again, but closer we sat still and boom he was 80-100 yards in front of us. The we saw him fly across the ditch in front of us and landed about 40 yards in front of us right in a patch of honeysuckle. well we couldn't see him but he was spitting and drumming for 15 mins. then after no sign of a hen he bolted away towards the other end of the property.
So we took off and made a loop and got in front of him we sat down put a decoy out and I made another round of calls. then we just sat there, suddenly the crows fired up about 200 yards in front of us to the left of us. which was on the other side of a large slough. so we jumped up again and got on the same side of the water as him and put the decoy out about 10 yards aways because t was really thick. well a 20 mins later I could see him walking through the thicket about 50 yards away.I found a opening and waited well about that time he looked up saw the decoy and poof he WAS GONE .YES GONE!! :character0029: :character0029: :character0029: :character0029: :character0029:
I'm wondering if he caught a movement or something more that just the deke? Tough old bird, something had him spooked?
That's tough, Hollis. Maybe Scott is right. Ditch the decoy with him, and make him find you.

I agree 100%, leave the decoy home. I've seen woods birds stop as soon as they see a decoy and wait for the hen to come to them. When she won't, they walk away. Good luck with him.
