Title: Suppose lb 4,5&6 shoot great. What to shoot?
Post by: Swampchickin234 on March 31, 2015, 11:06:28 PM
Couldn't stand it and just had to play with the lb. 40 yards.   6s are throwing 215230 ish , 5s going 160-180 ish, and 4s going up 120-140 ish.   I'm kinda thinkin hard on the 4 s.  what say y'all about it?  What would you shoot?  Oh and all 3 inch 13/4 ounce except for the 4s and they are 3 inch 17/8 ounce

All three Shot great out of my gun as well. I'm getting mid 150s with the 4s for the extra energy that they have over the other shot sizes

I haven't tried the 6s..
5's and 4's both shoot great out of my 535 as well as my single shot baikal I had William tweek out for me. I shot the 4's last year. Killed 6 and missed 3 or 4. That 535 is super tight with the 4's. 5's have better 12-14 inch coverage for me. The 4's are pretty much in about a 7" circle at 40. if I put a scope on that gun I'm probably going to shoot the 4's, if not I' will more than likely shoot winchester 3.5" HV 4's. that gun consistently put 100-115 in the 10 with those shells and has good 15" coverage

Those 6s are awesome out of my 835 as well. About 230-240 in the 10 on average. My gun shoots the 4s super tight as well. I have a few of both in my vest so I can decide what I want to shoot once I get to the woods

Not trying to hijack the thread but just got one quick question

Like I previously said I noticed better 12-14" coverage with the 5's as opposed to 120 In a 7 inch circle with the 4's and 20 stragglers in the rest of the 10 ring.

Did the 6s improve you're overall.15" coverage? a good even 15" pattern is what I like to see in a hunting gun. those high velocity 4's throw a mean pattern oit of this gun..i don't know what it is about this gun and 4's, I've never had a gun in my life that liked 4's. This fella i bought the gun from told me 4's was the way to go but I didn't wanna listen. He finally give me a box of 4's and opened my eyes up real quick. can't find the High velocity 4's any more though so I may try the LB 6's if they'll open up and not be quite so tight

5's, lotsa energy and good coverage. If I cannot get my Browning to come around I will be trying these out of a .685 Hastings, want to get them opening a bit.

Well every gun, shell, and choke combination is an anomaly unto itself; and some of those anomalies defy conventional wisdom (CW). For example....

I shoot a 20ga for turkey. Consequently I have much smaller payloads to work with; 1 & 1 1/8oz in a 2¾" shell, and 1¼ & 1 5/16oz in a 3" shell. A 12ga 3" & 3½" Mag contains 1¾, 1 7/8, 2, or 2¼oz of shot. Because the 20ga has far less shot CW thus dictates as a 20ga shooter, using Pb, I should choose to use small shot like 6 or 7½. I have a lot more pellets using #6 or 7½, so in theory at least; I should have far denser patterns. What patterns best in my gun however is Winchester® Supreme® 20ga 3" Mag 1200fps #4Pb. The pattern has fewer pellets; BUT THE PELLETS ARE MUCH MORE EVENLY DISTRIBUTED. I killed the biggest gobbler of my life at 42yds and put 19 #4Pb pellets into the base of his neck. He was dead before his beak was in the dirt.

My recommendation, since your gun patterns 4,5, or 6 equally well; is to use #4 for greater knockdown power.

Yeah the 6s threw an overall better 15-20" pattern for me. I would consider it a better hunting pattern than that of the 4s. Those are probably what I should hunt with but I'm obsessed with the big holes in the paper and the hard hitting power of those 4s.
