Today must be my lucky day! About a month ago I met with a contractor about doing some repair work on our family farm in a state that has Rios. I live about 4 hours away in Eastern species country. He went down to the farm with me and we chatted about the work I wanted him to do, we looked at some of our farm ground and I pointed out to him where I hunt turkeys and remarked how much I enjoyed turkey hunting by myself and with my grandsons. He mentioned his family owned some land in the same county but the lady relative in charge of it "Loves her turkeys" and wouldn't let anyone hunt. I guess I made a favorable impression on him and I called him today to line up his job and to my huge surprise he said...oh by the way I talked to, "Blanche", and convinced her she should let you , and only you, hunt turkeys on her place. I was almost speechless...to my knowledge this ground has NEVER been hunted and two weeks ago I counted two different groups of over 50 birds on it. I guess every now and then even a blind hog finds an acorn.
Better play the lottery tonight.
Sweet, every dog has his day.

It just goes to show that being pleasant with folks sometimes brings big dividends. Good for you!
Mine is a similar story. Twenty years ago, I was building our cabin in the mountains of southern New Mexico and a couple of guys drove up and asked me if I allowed anybody to cross my land to hunt elk on the National Forest behind my place. I talked to them a while to see what kind of people they were and then gave them permission to camp on the property, use the cabin to get out of the weather, if needed,.... and access the forest.
They thanked me and were all excited about their hunt, and right before they were about to go, they mentioned they were from Texas and had property there. I asked if they had turkeys and they said,..."Sure, we got lots of Rio Grande turkeys. If you want to hunt them, come on down."
Well, to make a long story a bit shorter, we have been hunting their places in Texas for about twenty years now and have killed dozens of Rios in that time. And it is all because of a coincidental short conversation and a kind gesture to other hunters.
It's good to hear other people's stories about the good fortune that can come from meeting new people and sharing our interests with them.
I've also been able to pick up two new private land places to hunt Easterns where I live this season and am really looking forward to hunting them.
