Title: 870 12 gauge 21" barrel
Post by: Dogwood1972 on March 29, 2015, 08:58:10 PM
Need some help.  I have been monitoring this site for an extended period of time and trust the wealth of experience I have seen.  I am running out of my stash of old white hull hevi shot 6's (4 left).  I purchased a case of the Remington hevi shot 6's, 3 inch, 1 5/8 oz before they were sold out to be my back up shell when the time came.  I am about to go crazy.  I have shot a kicks .650, .660, .665, a remingtin turkey choke and a new blackout choke .660.  The best I had was the Kicks .660 with 130 in a ten inch circle at 40 yards.  Before I bought a second kicks choke (the first is on my sons gun) I would like to know if there was another combination that was used back in the day that yielded better results.

Thanks for your responses.  Sorry for the rambling post.

Was the 130 with lead?? A buddy of mine had a few of these guns with the Rem Xtra full turkey tube and always ran Win. XX 2 oz. #5's. Bunch of dead gobblers to that combo.

I have 8 full boxes left of the old Remington Hevi Shot 6's.  This is what I want to shoot.  The 130 was with those.

The Jelly Head .660 is hard to beat in those 870's...

Jelly head .660 or hevi shot .662. have worked great in mine and 2 of my buddy's 870's with the HTL shells

I also suggest the Original Jellyhead .660 or the Hevi-Shot .662 chokes. :OGturkeyhead:

If it is the 1225 FPS load then try the unported Undertaker.  I shoot th 3.5's to this day, and it blows every other comparable shell/choke combo in my gun out of the water.  The 1300 FPS load didn't do as well though.

are you shooting at a large piece of cardboard or paper to see the entire pattern? Have you cleaned the bbl.??

Barrel cleaned.  Probably a 20" piece of cardboard.

Okay so I bought a .662 hevi shot choke.  I shot about 5 more shots and the best I had was 115 in a 10 inch circle.  Not horrible but definitely not to the level I read about on here.  I guess it's the best I am going to do with this load and gun.

Id say your good to go with 130 in the 10" @ 40.Hevi 6s @ 1225 will do some damage. With only 1 5/8 oz of shot it is probably gonna be hard to get high numbers with that load. But assuming its an even 130 with the kicks .660 id hunt and not worry about it.

I just bought a .662 Hevi 13 for my 20 bbl 870. Gonna shoot Hevi 3/2/6's, 3/2/7's and 3" Magblends. Will keep you posted.
