Title: Which guy are you?
Post by: jakesdad on March 24, 2015, 02:27:32 PM
No right or wrong answer here, just curious which person do you think you relate to best and why.I  seem to be leaning more and more towards #1.

1)You wear camo that you've had for years, not sure what its called or where you got it.Shoot the same shotgun with factory bead and same loads year in and year out.You can run several types of calls but usually pack your ol' reliable box call and maybe a pot call or two and a couple strikers(or trumpet,or tube, scratch box, etc. just havent changed calls since Reagan was president)Every morning you get up to hunt you put on the same camo clothes and grab your vest or small pack with the same stuff you've always taken to the woods for as long as you can remember.

2)Have the newest camo every year.Shoot multiple shotguns that pattern the newest high tech loads so any turkey within 40 yds is as good as dinner.Use a scope or red dot type sight to fine tune your extra tight setups. You've got a drawer full of every kind of call known to exist and can run them well, but every year you spend countless hours deciding which strikers sound best on what surface,or what type of reed cut gives you "that" sound. You lay awake at night thinking of which set of call combos you're hunting with next or what weapon you want to take. You stare at your 18 sets of camo looking for the "one" that will blend you in best.

Both #1 and #2 are consistent turkey killers, one not better or worse than the other.Who are you?
High tech and new or had it for years and see no need for anything else?

Not really one or the other. Same shotgun, loads, camo for several years. Have my go to calls, but always looking for new ones. Have lots of fun collecting calls and searching for that Holy Grail of turkey calls which probably doesn't exist but doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the quest. In addition, the callmakers new and old I get to become friends and the knowledge I get from them is the ultimate payoff.

More of number 2 . I gotta spend my $ on something. Plus it's a ton of fun getting new calls and trying new shell choke combos

I am a mix of both. I really enjoying testing out new loads, new calls, ect. But when it boils down to game time, I always typically have the same call beside me, same gun, same load/choke combo.

I think I'm number 1.5.

I've had the some of the same camp for years, and I can tell you exactly what the pattern is and I most likely got it at Walmart or a VF Outlet.  Until a couple years ago I had only killed turkeys with the same Mossberg 835 with #6 Winchester lead shells.  I happened to win an 870 in a calling contest, so I bought an Indian Creek and started shooting Hevi shot, but I still use the 835 every year.

As far as call, I am obsessed with them and I love learning how to use different types of calls and I own . . . a lot.  Yet, I usually end up using one of my favorite diaphragms and/or a slate with hickory striker.

Mostly number 1.  I do, and use the same things year in year out.  If it's wore out I squeeze another two or three seasons out of.   I'm a hunter of habit.   If I was a turkey I'd get killed the first morning!

I do a lot of what's listed in #2 I enjoy trying new things.
Always looking to get better. I try new calls every or every other year.

Primarily #1, only because I spend most of my money on duck hunting...

I usually purchase a couple of mouth calls each season, and one other piece of gear I have my eye on (next year will likely be a vest, as mine is old and falling apart).

The vast majority of my money spent on turkey hunting is in the form of gas...  Either lookin' for birds or driving out to hunt (most of my hunting areas are 60 miles or more)...

About 2/3 number 1 and 1/3 number 2.  I like the new stuff but don't see enough that I would actually buy.  Clothes are probably the most bought then shells, calls, etc.  My gun is not replaceable.  No interest in an upgrade.

A lot of us will fall in the middle, still on the same turkey vest and the shotgun my dad got me. Now I've up graded the stock, put a reddot on and tried few chokes to find a good hunting pattern.

Buying new turkey calls on the otherhand.. That's a different story

#1 30%, #2 70%?  Every year I get some new gear.  It's all part of the excitement leading up to the hunt. Buying new gear is worse after not bagging a bird in the previous season!  What about replacing stuff that's broken or wore out?

Camo - I think am using mostly the same stuff since day 1.  Might have replaced something if it faded from too many washings.  So that's a #1.

Gun - 15 years of hunting, on my 2nd gun, 2nd red dot.  Replaced my red dot because the seal broke and it constantly fogged.  I guess that still might put me at a #2 since I use a red dot.

Vest - On my second which I changed out early on, won't change my newer one until it wears out. I'd give that a #1.

Calls - Ok, every year I add something, especially mouth calls because they are relatively cheap.  Added new shock calls last year, new strikers this year.  #2.

Decoys - I think it's best to NOT use them more often than not.  Tend to pull them out if I'm second guessing myself.  However, if I'm going to use them, I want them to "look real" which I know is a bad human trait as the turkeys likely don't know the difference. Just bought some fancy expensive ones.  #2.

Binoculars - Had the same pair since before I ever turkey hunted but a hinge broke and they fogged a lot, I think a seal was broken.  Replaced it with a monocular.  Given that most use them and I wouldn't have replaced them had they not had a problem, #1?

Camera - My wife bought me a GoPro for Christmas.  #2.

60% Number 2.   A lot of my turkey hunting camo doesn't match but I have 5 turkey shotguns, two with Red Dots, a tackle box full of turkey chokes and keep collecting more calls each year...oh and files of shot patterns I refer to from year to year.

I definitely lean heavily toward #1, but I do change a few things up sometimes. I also carry little equipment and have never owned a vest...

Mostly number 1. I do use a red dot and have many different shotguns and chokes. Usually find what works and stick with it. As for the calls, now that I have more money than when I was younger, I have invested in a little higher quality calls but once I find the ones I am happy with, I won't change them. If it isn't broke beyond repair, I don't change it basically.....

#2 until I zero in on something I really like....

I don't hunt to save money...I can buy meat at the meat store....

New gear has connected me to so many great people....

I like to use the best gear I can afford, be it new or old...

Number 1 with a red dot scope on my lone turkey gun.  I even used a brown Sharpie to touch up the camo on my "turkey hunting" cap.

Break out the popcorn, here comes another long winded explanation.

Up until about 21 years of age, I was a #1 through and through. Only thing I'd ever buy was a box of shells. I wasn't a great caller so at most I'd have a single reed diaphragm, my crow call, owl hooter and a couple foam decoys that the paint was wearing off so bad you couldn't tell they were turkeys. If I called one in to myself, it was a miracle. Generally went with a buddy of mine and he did most of the calling so it all worked out in the end. WV allows the use of rifles and I hadn't owned a shotgun in so long I just always grabbed the 22 mag. It worked and the vast majority of my birds were still shot within 40 yards.

Fast forward 2-3 years, I went on a pheasant hunt and needed a shotgun. Didn't feel good borrowing one so I bouht an 835 as it seemed like a do it all utilitarian shotgun and I'd hardly use its anway. Carried it turkey hunting once to make my buddy happy and sold it shortly after because it had a super long waterfowl barrel and was a pain to carry in the dense woods. Went back to the 22 magnum.

At the age of about 25, things changed. Decided I wanted to try the shotgun thing. Bought and sold quite a few before settling on one I liked. Still do a lot of buying and selling so that keeps me in a #2 status. Theyre all topped with a red dot for turkeys so again, a # 2. I play with them every spring testing new loads and chokes, buy new calls (mostly to support local call makers now), replaced the foam decoys for something more compact, yadda,yadda...

My camo has been around for about 7 years. Still using the same vest for the past 10 years. After years of buying every type of call I could get my hands on thinking it would make me a better caller, I've settled on a particular type of diaphragm so I get a few of them every year since they don't generally last long in my care. I did recently buy a long slate from Tylersburg Yelpers and it's the sweetest thing I've ever heard in slate style calls so I'm done there unless I need a replacement. Got several strikers through them as well and unless they're lost or broken, I'll not need another.

Said all of that to say this: started as a 1, converted to a 2, trying to get back to a 1 but I'll always have to decide on which toy to take in the morning. Always nice to hear something different go "boom."

I buy alot of stuff but I use it till it's absolutely worn out. I hate to change my load and shell combos but I do when they stop making them. I love to buy and learn new calls but I always end up scratching a hickory striker across my Doug camp slate I got when I was little. And Turkey hunting without a red dot is like taking a crap without toilet paper. I use the same camouflage every year but I buy and new vest every couple of years and its alway the same one. I guess I'm a little bit of both #1 and #2.

These days I'm 60% #1 and 40% #2.  I was 100% #1 when I started turkey hunting because that was the only way there was.  Now, I want the best turkey gun I can get my hands on and the most lethal ammo to hunt with.  I switched turkey calls because I broke my old Lynch box when I fell crossing some rapids fording a creek 30 years ago. I've been using the same long box for over a decade.  It was either move on, or do without.   My old camo is either faded out or worn out.  I mostly buy ammo and a few mouth calls each year because I have everything else I need.

I run a diaphragm 90% of the time. You wont find a box call in my vest when I wear it. I wear mossy oak camo most of the time.I shoot TSS thru a 20 because I am guaranteed a dead turkey if I do my part.

Little of both. Use a diaphragm call 90% of the time and hate box calls but I do like to keep it simple. Don't need new camo but I do like nice camo and gear.

I'm definitely a combo of 1 and 2.  I like buying new chokes and trying new loads.  Not necessarily because I think I need to, I just enjoy seeing what they will do.  I will usually buy a new call every year but lots of times I go back to the ones I have liked for years.  I don't have a scope on my shotguns, but I don't have a factory bead either.  It's been years since I have bought new clothes for turkey hunting, but I think that will change this year.

75% 2...
I did recently buy some new camo. I'd like some snake proof boots. Still wearing my old boots and my vest is coming apart. It needs replaced but I go with the old stuff. I do like to buy a new call every few years now. I've learned its better to buy a nice one every few years than some big box store junk all the time. I'm not planning on getting a new turkey gun. BUT I do love my guns so I might add another to the collection. I do buy a lot of stuff but I use the old stuff a lot also.

Im about 75% #2 and alittle of #1. I learn something to try every year.
I do like the custom calls, I have a few turkey guns and still adding.
I use the same calls but always have to buy new mouth calls.
The camo will never change "Mossy Oak Obsession" unless it fades but Ill buy new.

Definately number 2. I'm fairly new to turkey hunting but I'm always getting new stuff or modifying my old stuff for deer and it seems to be going the same for turkey. I have, in my opinion, found the holy grail of hunting clothing this year so I should be set on that for awhile.

I'd say 75% #1 and 25% #2. I've had the same vest, mossy oak camo, and turkey gun since 2007. I would say 25% #2, because It's nice to pick up a new choke/ammo and spend some time at the range with my dad. When the wife buys a new pair of shoes I have a good excuse to pick up another custom call or a new decoy.

#1 except for calls. Since I make calls and trade calls, there are just so many great sounding calls in the arsenal, just have to give them a work out. When I make a trade and tell the maker I will harvest a bird with thier call it becomes a mission. I expect the same in return if they say so.

Good mix of both.

I have been using the same gun since 1989 with roughly the same loads, and have never really patterned it.  It just kills turkeys.  I collect new calls every year, but find myself going back to the old reliable very often.

Now the vest thing has more torn up.  I love a new vest.
