Title: a wing and a prayer
Post by: turkaholic on March 22, 2015, 07:16:26 AM
Just wondering how many of you guys use turkey wings as part of you arsenal? I always carry one and it has been a killer call. I prefer to use it over all other calls because its natural. With a gobbler on roost all you need is a wing, and a little leaf to scratch in. Many times I will take my wing and scrape the tree bark and they can't stand it. There is nothing that sounds like wings in the woods except wings and turkeys respond to that. Sometimes the best calls are not calls you buy, but the ones you make. I take a wing off and dry it out, then I pour two part epoxy all over the end to make a handle. Then take a roll of electrical tape and go over it and make a nice hand hold. One wing will last many years. It also makes a great tool for scratching in the leaves. Try it out its deadly!

Don't use a wing but have used my hat and you are correct, that sound can draw them down to a desired location w/out every touching a call. Good luck this season.

I'll even use my wing with aggressive purring to imitate a fight. I've used this method on occasion if it seems like I have a couple birds together acting like 2 year olds. Sometimes it's sealed the deal and others they hang up just far enough for no shot. When it works I've had them literally come running in at full sprint.

I've been using a wing for about 30 years. Ben Lee first told me about it during a conversation I had with him in the early 80's.

Works great in leaves and scratching against a tree as mentioned, but also is a fantastic roosting/fly down imitator. Nothing more natural sounding than the wing beats of a hen flying up or down from the roost. Mixed with some soft clucks and even a cackle in the evening, you can be on that gobblers mind all night- and be back at that same spot in the morning to whisper "'Morning Big Boy!"  :z-flirtysmile3:
