Title: Called in a bird scouting today
Post by: g8rvet on March 15, 2015, 09:13:18 PM
Was poking around and tracking, heard a few gobbling. Left them and went to a spot I had been years ago and had not seen in a while.  It was little past flydown in a low area, so I hooted (with my mouth and hands only).  Gave it my best "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you allllllllllll".  No gobbler answers but it seems to pizz off an owl.  We laugh and I call back to him a few times.  We walk on and my nephew says, that owl is following us.  So I call a few more times.  He flies to a pine about 100 yards away and I give him the aggressive call.  He flies up to a tree right over our heads.  I wave a little and he does not spook, looking right down at us. A redtail flies into the same tree and he starts popping his beak at him (owl for we fixin to tangle).  He hoots at the hawk, which I caught on my iPhone.  The hawk beats a retreat and the owl posed for a few more pictures.

That is pretty cool...

One of my favorite aspects of turkey hunting is the sheer amount of nature I have seen.

Whilst attempting to call in turkeys, I have called in coyotes, foxes, bobcats (one of which attacked a motion hen, and one of which jumped on the same fallen tree I was using), deer, and numerous hawks and crows...  Had grey squirrels come within inches of me, and watched coopers hawks hunting quail (and as a quail hunter I had mixed feelings about that)....

I have always enjoyed owls though...  interesting creatures for sure.
