Title: Shell didnt go off
Post by: ThunderChickenGetter on March 14, 2015, 02:24:29 PM
I was out patterning my 835 with my new nitro shells and the second one i tried to shoot didnt go off, just the sound of the hammer. I waited a minute and pulled the shell out, from the looks of it the firing pin didnt hit the primer as hard as the one previously shot. Out of curiosity I loaded a new shell up and it shot perfectly fine. Did my gun cause this to happen or could it have been the shell?

well nitro has been running low on powder :( :(

Was that the first time you pulled the trigger in a while ? maybe pin was gummed up a bit.
Or how did the primer look seated compared to the other shells?

try cleaning it up a bit and go shoot a box of field loads to make sure your good.

It wasn't the first time it has been shot this spring, I've shot a couple hevi's and some longbeards with no problems. And the primer looked to be seated properly. I'll probably take the gun apart and clean it really well. I'd like to not shoot any more of the nitros if I don't have to because they cost a pretty penny! I'll post a picture of the shell that didn't go off compared to one that did.

I have a suggestion before you totally tear your gun down. Rest your 835 on the butt end and put some CLP on and into the firing pin. Let it "rest" for a while, over night is good,  and then put a bit more and dry fire your gun a few time.  Wipe off any excess that may be on your bolt face and take your gun to the range. That may cure your problem.

Thanks,
Clark

Sounds like a bad shell.

I'm all about complete disassembly of my
Firearms each spring. The military keeps
Their weapons in perfect working order for
A reason!!!  Their life depends on it.  This isn't
a life or death situation, but when we spend
Countless hours in preparation, patterning,
Time off work, ect.....
Just makes good common sense to clean it properly
Every year!!!!
A dirty firing mechanism cost my buddy 2 birds
In the same morning.
I shot the second one, it was a 25# 14oz STUD!!!
