Title: Info wanted on choke/gun/shell combo
Post by: HogBiologist on March 13, 2015, 03:22:44 PM
I have a mossy 835 with a .690 Carlsons. I am interested in Longbeard 3.5" #6 info. I am going by an Academy later today and want to get some LB. Anybody have any info?

In my recent evaluation with WLP shells through the Mossberg 835,  chokes from .670 to .676 did best but the Mossberg X-Factor with a .695 e.d. still put up good coverage with no 2" or larger gaps. Those were all 3" shells with 1.75 oz. of #6 shot.

Thanks,
Clark

I shoot the same gun and while I have not used the .690 restriction choke I have used the new carlsons Winchester longbeard choke which is .683 restriction. With the 3.5"  long beard 6's I get in the 220 range,  with 5's I get in the170 range, and with 4's I get 120-135 hits. These results are in a 10" circle at a lasered 40 yds. I have also tested the factory choke which I believe is .695 restriction which yielded about 30-40 fewer hits with 4's, 5's, and 6's. I've tested other chokes but these are the only two that's close to your setup. Hope this helps and I'd be glad to share my other choke numbers if your interested. Just for the record. I'll be using the long beard 4's this season with the .676 Hevi-13 choke which puts over 160 hits in a 10" @40. I also agree that the .670-.676 range would probably yield the best results .

I have a 835 with the 24" barrel and with the WLB 3.5" #6 and a Indian Creek .675 I'm getting right around 270 hits at 40 yards in a 10" circle. I haven't tried them in a more open Choke yet, I have a jellyhead .690 but I use it for my nitros.

With the 835 and a .690 choke, I would try the #4's first.
The patterns being posted here lately, as well as my own have been wicked stout.
