Title: The Ultimate Choice
Post by: MEbeardlover on March 11, 2015, 09:41:04 PM
Ok, if you could only run one type of call for the remainder of your turkey hunting career, what would it be and why? I'm not talking about a brand, but a type. So, what's your pleasure? Diaphragm? Pot call? Box call? Tube? Wing bone? Something else? Looking forward to replies.

That's a tough one but I have to say mouth call because of the no movement and hands free aspect.

Diaphragm. Hands free and I get a more realistic turkey sounds out of a diaphragm call.

More often than not in the woods I've got a box in my hands.

That would be my choice.

Diaphragm

Probably this, you can go soft to loud, purrs to gobbles, and be hands free and not worry about weather. Actually sometimes I wonder why a spend so much on pots, strikers, box calls, ect ect when I could tag out on a pocket full of $5-8 mouth calls and a few shells every year

Oh well, back to ordering more calls

box. for all those saying a diaphragm is the most realistic call , walk in the woods with someone and carry a box call. let that person get about 50 yards and out of sight. let him play that call and listen to the realism in it. I have heard so many hens through the years that I would have bet anything that it was a incompetent caller running a box poorly and about to screw up my hunt , only to see one of those feathered girls strolling right up. again all turkeys sound different and it comes down to what you are most confident in.

A trumpet. Reeds do not wear out, does not need chalking, works in any weather, don't have to have a striker, spring doesn't squeak, and never wears out. Plus they flat out work.

I'll take a slate call, ..the more and more I use a box call though, the more I'm liking them..but for now, hard to beat my slate call..I agree with Spitten N drummin as far as walking 50 yards and have someone else run your calls...run a slate, box, scratch box, mouth diaphram, etc..judge calls from a distance with someone who can run a call playing..you may change your mind about what sounds best...hard to beat a slate, or box call...I can go either way honestly, they both sound pure hen turkey to my ear.

Diaphragm call only because it will work no matter the weather. If I never hunted in rain or fog, it would be a toss up between a pot call and box call.

I am going to go with tube call.......why? Because they are weather proof, easy to create as many turkey sounds as you will need, they are cheap, and easy to carry.

The one you feel you operate the best. Nothing will beat confidence in the call you have.

What fun would turkey hunting be without calls...  To me, for duck and turkey calls are the ladies equivalent of shoes...  Lot's of money for something I do not need that is just fun to have...

That being said, a mouth call would be my choice if I could only carry one type of call, but there have been a number of times when I have elicited a response for a box call, when other calls did not.  It is loud, and I believe due to the sound chamber, as Spitten and drummen has noted, it has a realism that is lacking in other calls...

However, a box call is not such a good choice while it is raining.
