Hey guys..having gun doc thread barrel for choke..asked him to drill and tap he said no not over the chamber? Confused have seen guns here on o.g. done, any suggestions? If not drill and tap, what?
Most likely chamber versus receiver? I would not drill on or into the chamber.
could weld/fuse on a steel mount
are you drilling and tapping for a scope base or iron sights, either way there is enough metal there, h&r sells their 20ga tracker II light contour drilled and tapped for a scope base with no issues, i have never heard of anyone not being able to drill and tap a 20ga, 12ga yes problems but 20ga no, find someone else to do it
do not weld, i tried it and it will warp the chamber, you can use a steel scope rail by warne and silver solder it to the barrel and it will hold fine

:agreed:
I had my H&R 20ga drilled and tapped last year for a scope base.
Go to Gray Beards Outdoors. They have an entire section on H&R and Handi guns. BTW I shoot a 12GA that is drill and tapped for a scope. Also have one that has a steel scope base welded on. No problems with either.
+1 on grey beard outdoors they have a handi rifle section that will have all the info you need, its the only site other than OG that the members are truly addicted to their craft
I've got a nef single shot 12ga it's a turkey killer. Drilled and tapped and no problem's.
If you can find a scope rail that fits snug to the barrel, you can use JB weld to put it on there. The only way to remove it will be to heat it to 500 degree which ain't a problem since you have to heat it much hotter than that to affect the heat treating. One of the gun manufacturers used JB weld to install sight and said that on a shotgun barrel, it took several thousand PSI to press it off and then it peeled the barrel open. I put sight on my Win 1300 using JP weld and wound up changing the front ramp. I tried to knock it off with a hammer and bent the sight. I then heated just the sight with a propane torch and it fell right off. The key is to rough up and degrease the spot where the sight will sit. I used a level to get everything true. Find a flat spot on the gun and put a level on it in a shooting vice and level, then install the mount and put a level on it. I used a mini level that goes on a string to do mine. Windage was dead center; better than a factory installation in my opinion.
thanks guys!
Gundocc just drilled/tapped my NEF 20 gauge so he should be able to do yours. The only problem I could see is if there wasn't enough metal there to do so, especially if he's lengthening the forcing cone. We ran into that issue with my dad's 12ga encore. One thing is for sure though, if Curtis tells you it can't be done, then it can't be done! :anim_25:
I agree. Curtis knows his stuff.
