I am curious as to why my numbers are running low compared to others I have seen on here. I have the 870 turkey/predator with 20" bbl. After testing with JH .665 my best was 153 in the 10 at 40 and that was with longbeard 6s, this choke did not like the mag blends as the came in at 130's.
I bought a JH max .660 to try out and jumped my numbers up a bit to 174 with mag blends. The longbeards however did not like the .660. I also had hevi 6's shot thru both chokes but they never out performed magblend or longbeard.
It seems most people with this gun/choke combo put up 200+ regularly. I also polished my barrel prior to testing and bore snaked between each shot. All shells were 3.5", any ideas?
Get yourself a can of Denatured Alcohol in the paint section at Wal Mart and run a few soaked patches down that barrel after bore snaking it. This will remove any traces of polish and/or oil residue which can diminish your patterns.
Thanks, I will try that on my next round. Do you think the .660 is the right constriction with the shorter barrel? What are typical numbers to be expected with 20" .660 and mag blends? Any other recommendations?
I get 200+ with a JH Maxx (.660) using 3" #7 Hevi-Shot in my 20" barreled 870.
Choke it down more. I would try a .650.
This cold weather has been keeping the numbers down a bit.

Put something in the 650 to 660 range in it. The Win long beard should do well in that gun. The HV13 should do good also.

You talking LB #6's?
For me the numbers for the LB 3.5 6s got worse when I went to the tighter choke. I had 154 in the 10 at 40 with the .665 vs 120 hits with the .660. Where as the mag blends deff liked the tighter choke at 174 hits. I want to pick up some HV13 7s just to see what they will do. As of right now its magblends for me.
What are my options for chokes in the .650 - .655 range?
A lot of it with the long beards is the gun. I like the 6s in most guns. Now the 5s work good in the brownings.
I would roll with .665 #6 Longbeard in that gun. You don't want to overchoke the Longbeards. I also like to relieve some of the pressure on the load.

Is this a consistent pattern or just your best pattern with this combo, Mossy??
