Title: Any of your birds ever been named
Post by: savduck on February 08, 2011, 11:11:40 PM
I like hunting tough to kill birds. Some even get named after not being able to kill them.

Kevlar........this bird got shot and survived. Kill him 4 weeks later. I watched this bird for several seasons. The next weekend after I shot him there were 6 or 7 other gobblers gobbling and fighting. Nothing like killing the dominant tom to get the others going.

Thunder Gut............This bird was on public land, He would gobble but go the other way. He had a weird rattle to his gobble...almost like an echo. We chased him three times during a 7 day hunt. On one of the hunts, this old timer ran into us...we must have been in his honey hole. He said he never had anyone else hunt this spot until us. He mentioned there was a special gobbler with a weird gobble he had been after for three seasons. He said he would kill his limit on this property, but every year this bird would gobble and come in only to retreat, he would go to sleep agitated by this gobbler. That story put a big smile on our face. Hope the ol boy finally got him.

Nine Lives..........Another public land gobbler. Had him in gun range three different times. One time I had a video camera and no gun, another time he was behind trees, no shot. The third time he came running in at first light before I even had the gun loaded. I snuck in CLOSE....50 yards. He must have heard the leaves rustling or something and pitched out. He was gobbling so much he couldnt hear me creeping. He is still alive and Im after him again this season.

Ol Squirrley........private land bird with tons of hunting pressure on him. He would gobble 8 or 9 times and come fairly easy until he hit the edge of a power line right of way. Instead of walking into the middle he would stop a foot into the clearing and stand there. He would  strutt a couple of times and then turn and walk back into the swamp. It was about 70 yards across the right of way with no where to sit. I figured out how he like to come out of the swamp went back with my duck waders and sat in two foot of water so I was in gun range of the edge. He got killed the first try wearing the waders.

Let me see, I can think of: %@#$ &*@#, ^&%$#$, @%&@$@#, & !$$@#!   ;D

Seriously, the only bird I set out to specifically kill last year & didn't became to be affectionately known as "Sonny".  I was bound & determined to kill this guy with a bow or not at all.  "Sonny" was the rated "G" version of what I found myself muttering under my breath every time he pranced by just out of bow range.   :angry9:

Yea I name all my birds ... if I can find a characteristic that makes em stick put. Like the first bird on this years hit list ... Dueces ... yup, he's got a double beard you can see from 50 yards if he turns sideways. I saw him twice during the end of deer season.

And if any of you wanna see Sonny ... he's in the intro of our shows this season. He's the bird standing up right before you see Brian "wareagle" King. :-)

Federal property. One of the rules is that the gun has to be cased and unloaded until you are in the woods. I had slipped in with a canoe, and he was roosted just off the river bank. 9 lives will die this year. He was in his spot the last day you were allowed to hunt this place.

He should score good this year.

I'm thinking about getting my binos out during scouting and finding me a double beard. That really makes the score go up.

All of the gobblers that hangup out of range, gobble and don't show up, show up quiet and bust me while I'm getting up to move, or follow after a group of hens get some variety of a four letter name. Those hens that lead him off get one of two 5 letter names, sometimes both. I will say that any the hens that lead a gobbler into the setup, I've always called Sweetheart, and I always like to thank them by shooting their stalkers...
