Title: Kansas or Missouri?
Post by: jtg88 on February 19, 2015, 12:59:34 PM
Having been raised in the South (MS and AL), I'm ready to try my luck with turkeys in some new places. If you could only hunt in one of the two states, KS or MO, this spring, which would it be?  When people talk turkeys, Missouri always comes up as the #1 spot to visit but I've been looking hard at Eastern Kansas too.  Both appear to have plenty of public lands to move around on. Thanks.

Either is good. I hunt both beach spring.  The thing is Kansas dose have the Rio factor, and cheaper tags.

I'd pick Kansas just due to the fact that Missouri only allows one bird per week....

Another thing to consider, in Missouri, you have to quit at 1 pm.

I prefer Kansas.  It has a longer season, no afternoon cutoff,  no weird one-bird during first week and only one per day for the rest rule, cheaper tags, and so on.  HOWEVER, Missouri has that "atmosphere" that can't really be described.

I live in Missouri and have hunted both states for 18 or so years now.  If I were traveling a distance to hunt and had to choose one of the two, I would pick Kansas.  Ten years ago, the choice would have been really easy for Kansas, but hunting pressure and word about Kansas has gotten out.  Missouri is still a great choice, but as others have mentioned, there are rules in place that are not as attractive as Kansas.  You can kill two birds in a single trip in Missouri if you wait until the second week of the season to come hunt.

Being from Missouri, we see more action in three days in Kansas than three weeks in Mo. I vote Kansas, plus those Rios are some fun birds.

If you are driving that far don't stop in Eastern KS. We don't have a lot of public and what we do have gets hammered. Having the major population centers in the East hurts, plus its the first place guys from the SE stop. Its bad enough I ponied up the money to buy my own place. Last year was the first year I was actually nervous of getting shot on public. Word is out on KS.

Depends on the terrain you like to hunt. Missouri is big tracts of timber. Kansas is creek draws with some decent sized tracts of timber and/or prairie. Ten years ago we didn't see anyone turkey hunting in KS but now even the private ground we hunt is overrun with folks trespassing.
