What's your favorite mouth call? I've used several but seem to come back to the basic double diaphragm calls like the old raspy hen. I'd like to try some others but don't want to keep wasting money. Please don't tell me that "it's the call that works best for me."
My 3 favorites are:
Woodhaven copperhead
Gooserbat hillbilly
Gooserbat bacon
I use whatever I take a notion to, wouldn't rank one ahead of the other.
Hooks Executioner II
Check out Hooks!!! I like the swindler & the new game changer series.
If you won't to stay at a two reed with a sound that doesn't sound like a double try our tom bomb 2 reed.. Bet you will be happy..

I would say my OsS or Bacon.
My experience with all levels of callers and their general calling abilities is that a double or triple reed call made with .003 latex or a combination of latex and proph (.0025), and with some form of V-cut or modified V-cut, will usually work best for the majority of them.
Users often have trouble with heavier latex combinations and more "non-traditional" reed cuts such as the bat-cut and ghost-cut calls.
Also, depending on how you "blow" a call, having the cuts in the sound reed in certain locations (center, off-set right, or left) may make a big difference on how well you call. My advice is to look at each call you are considering buying, regardless of manufacturer, and make your choices based on cut style and latex thickness to start with. If you have some idea of "what works best for you", then you do have a starting point on making your choices.
Finally, buying a call because it has a high price-tag is generally a useless way to determine the sound quality of a call,...and your potential ability to use it.

Good info!
Houndstooth
Hooks
Both of these are good call makers and reasonably priced.
Thanks. I'm a novice with mouth calls but feel like them best bo used a slate all my life and recently made the switch. What is better about having a notch vs just straight cuts?

QB pro triple & a Butzki Cuttin caller 4, thats what I learned on & cant get away from them. Mike
HS Raspy Old Hen. Probably should try a lot of others but this usually will close the deal.

Not sure what you mean by "notch vs straight cuts". I think you are asking about the difference between calls that have cuts made in the latex reeds and those that do not. In terms of sound production, uncut-reed calls generally produce more clear, less raspy, tones than cut-reed calls. Uncut-reed calls have largely gone "out of style" for most hunters simply because cut-reed calls produce more realistic turkey sounds, as a whole, than do uncut-reed calls.
If you are asking about different reed cuts, there are many different types that have been developed through experimentation by mouth call makers,...as I am sure you are aware if you have looked at mouth calls in catalogs. A really good experienced mouth call user can make turkey noises on just about all of them, but for the average caller, there are some designs that consistently are easier to use than others. I listed some of those previously.
The fact is though, that a beginning mouth call user has to go through a learning process to determine what call design is the best for themselves. Trial and error is just a fact of life for those wanting to learn to use mouth calls.
GobbleNut- thanks for your detailed replies.

TOPS Real Hen. The one with the green tape. It's the one that brings in the most birds to the gun for me.
Woodhaven copperhead II , woodhaven scorpion, dead end batwing 2 for clucks and purrs. Gonna try some gooserbat this year.
Jim pollard original bat wing 3.
Gooserbat Bacon...I love it
A ghost cut made by Sadler McGraw is the first one out of my call case. Fine call
Try the Hooks. I can use any call but the Hooks blows so easy it's fun to use em. Just recently tried them n I'll be ordering more
Woodhaven red wasp, black wasp

Thanks! I got the gooserbat bacon and hooks executioner II. I've never used a three reed call and am surprised at the difference. Does anyone have a general tip when going from double to triple reed? Initially it seems like I need to keep it farther forward in the tongue and blow harder. Is that about right? Fortunately I've got a month to practice and a 30 minute commute to work :-)

On the rare event I have a mouth call in, It's a Woodhaven Copperhead.
YAK Game Calls ridge runner or persuasion! For a nice raspy hen very easy to blow
Sadler McGraws 2.5 reed ghost cut and 3 reed combo cut
Primos "True Double" stacked frame.
Hook's devastator for me!
QB Old Boss Hen.
Halloran She Devil
Of what I have tried the best for me is hook hunters by primos
Houndtooth---Dixie Combo. Any of Lyles calls are gobbler killers! Also like his Vixen call.
Can't believe no one mentioned Preston Pittman black diamond. My go to call.

I play all calls in the same place in my mouth no matter the reed count, three reeds will take more air, but at least for the Bacon, you should not have to push a lot of air. Try moving your tongue around to find the "sweet spot" on the Bacon, it should be fairly centered (left/right) then move your tongue back and forth. Also, try varying tongue pressure.
Thanks. The bacon is working out now. For the record I like it better than the hooks executioner II so far

That's cool as i have some bacon coming :turkey2:
Ive tryd a few and thus far the will Primos Signature Series Green tape w black reed has been the most easy to conquer For a lot of guys i hunt with :funnyturkey:
I have tried a couple hooks calls and the one I like the best is th devastator. Really easy to use with a lot of range.
Not much of a mouth call guy,but my favorite is the True Double by Primos.
woodhaven black wasp, followed by a cane creek MR.Death...these 2 have been the easiest most consistant ones i have found for me and they sound good to boot.

Thanks for the tips. Hooks executioner II was the moneymaker.

I am finding the Legacy Lone Hen to be my most all around easiest call to use/make turkey sounds. I can make some nice sounding yelps and cuts with the LH, but my go to call for purrs and clucks so far is the Dead End Game Calls Batwing 2.

I think to some degree it will depend on your pallet... I have a fairly steep pallet. For the basic sounds, the call sits fairly far forward in my mouth. The more reeds, the more air pressure needed to make them work. Also, the tighter the latex the more air pressure needed.
I do have to move the call back to get good purrs, and can purr and cut with the call further back, but I cannot yelp. I have practiced and practiced with the call forward, and I simply cannot make it purr... Move it to the back of my pallet, and purring becomes far easier (I am trilling my tongue for the purr).
Two days ago this would not have concerned me, as I generally do not go from a purr to a yelp... However, yesterday I had a hen come in that went from putting, to cutting, to purring, to yelping within about a second... :P
My favorites this year are the
Red Wasp from
Woodhaven, the
OSS from
Gooserbat, and the
3rd Strike from
Gooserbat...
I like a few of Denny Gulvas's calls but my all time favorite is a Woodhaven red wasp.

Hooks strikes again!

Primos Tru Double. Reeds never stick together. I started with a Quaker Boy Raspy Old Hen, and have tried others through the years, but I stick with the Primos call.
Hooks Swindler & Game Changer 2
XT Calls Havoc and Mayham
Tried out GOOSERBATS this year and they sound AWESOME to me that is, we'll see what the gobblers thinks. I like 3RD STRIKE but BACON sounds pretty good too but all pallets are different but worth a try.
I've used and taken a bunch of birds with the executioner and executioner 2.
I've gave then to newbies and a few tips and in a short time they pick it up.
Great call, easy to run from purrs to deep sharp cuts.
Cane Creek Tough Man
Woodhaven CopperHead
Cane Creek Mr. Death
Down N Dirty Anthrax

Good stuff
Just ordered a red wasp to try. I'm sure it's just my lousy skills but I can't get the gooserbat bacon to sound as great as everybody else seems to.

Hope the wasp works for you, may not be your fault just that all calls fit different but when you get one that fits you buy 100 naw just keep it in the back of your mind when you need a replacement. I cant use 90% of the ones I've bought over the years, I have a jar in the frig full of them even tho some of my friends run them great. GOODLUCK!
Love the hooks line of diaphragm calls......#1 in my book!
The wasp is pretty sweet. Hooks is easier but I bet with practice the wasp will be better. Sounds great

Been using a Woodhaven Red Ghost a lot lately...awesome call.
Good advice
Houndstooth Tom Bomb,Gooserbat Bacon and Legacy Fatal Attraction
I keep tryin' 'em and keep going back to the Woodhaven classic V2. easy to run and works! That said, Bought two new ones this year that sound really good and are easy to run...Pecker Wrecker Home Wrecker and Flirt. We'll see what the turkeys think in 5 days! :OGani:
I just got the 3rd strike ,OSS,and double bit from goosebat and I like em but my favorite is 3rd strike but still deciding if to use it or my hook hunter primos call ...something about the hook hunter that just makes it sound spot on ......gonna try wood haven and hooks next
Hooks again. Tagged out. (http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/18/81f1481273c57ee9f7713b501ec0e239.jpg)
Gooserbat hillbilly and bacon
Primos 2" hooks
Woodhaven Black Wasp, Copperhead 2, or Hornet gets my vote
Got a Zinck Raspy Sister that I'm really liking too!
Primos hook hunter long hooks ...birds love the rasp
Don't think it matters what the rest of the responses are, it's going to be the Hooks for this guy with a 3 bird tag out....
been a woodhaven fan for quite a few years
tried gooserbat last year and now have about half a dozen different woodhavens and gooserbats and like em all
this year's 3 toms came in hot to trot to 3 different diaphragms - woodhaven black venom and copperhead and a gooserbat double bit

You're right on that one. 4 birds on that executioner II and I'm sold. It works well for me.
I always start the year with a variety of mouth calls, but at the end of the season I find I'm always using the Hooks Executioner II more than any other. It has brought many birds to the gun for me and seems to get birds to respond when others won't. In fact it will probably be the only diaphragm I buy this year...
Gulvas calls, any of them.
I think you would really benefit from watching scott elis's mouth call magic,he explains all the cuts, how to find the one that works best and goes into great detail on using them.i could always use a call enough to kill a bird but I have to say that dvd helped me improve a lot,and taught me things I knew nothing about before.

There's a lot of great mouth calls out there, but my go to is any well made triple reed combo cut.
