Title: Thoughts on chokes for Remington 870 sps shurshot
Post by: BakerMan12 on February 13, 2015, 01:27:39 PM
Wanted to see if anyone has good choke set up for the Remington 870 and Hevi Shot magnum blend?  I bought the Remington 870 SPS shurshot a couple of years ago and have to say it's been a great gun.  I am currently shooting 3.5" Hevi Shot magnum with Carlson's .660 turkey choke (non ported) but can't seem to get the pattern consistency Im shooting for in the 40 yard range. Im holding good patterns to 30 yards but have a lot of strays at 40+ yards. I have tried some different types of shells with similar results. Most of my shots are typically not 40+ yards but would like to have a pattern consistency that I feel confident with about 55 yard max shot.
The gun has a fairly short barrel at 23" and I have been toying around with the idea of trying a different choke. Ive been impressed with the magnum blend and would like to stay with it.  Any suggestions or does anyone use a similar set up?

I have shot the same gun for years. Lots of great chokes out there but I get outstanding results with a 665 Indian creek. It patterns consistently with most of the HTL loads.

Contact SumToy chokes.  I have one for an 870 and mossburg 835.  SumToy's deal used to be if you ordered a choke from him he would work with you until you got one to shoot.  Not sure if he still does this or not.  It took a couple different tries for each gun before they shot well.  Paid one price and got great shooting guns.  Way cheaper than purchasing multiple chokes.

X2. My 870 likes a Indian Creek with the HeviShot shells.

I have the same gun and get 218 at 40 with a Jellyhead 660 and 3.5" magblends.   Imo a respectable hunting gun.

If your trying to keep costs low its tough to beat the JellyHead for the price.

Picked up the Jellyhead .660 over the weekend, problem solved... Very impressed with the patterns at 40 yards using Hevi Shot Magnum Blend.  Shot at the turkey head target printed off the Remington website and counted about 37 shots in the head.  Thanks again for the choke advice
