Title: Lot's of walnut
Post by: KYStalker on February 10, 2015, 12:56:43 PM
I know nothing about making calls, but just had a decent size walnut tree cut down to make room for a power line.  I would like to have some box calls made from it for myself, my father, and my son, then the call maker can use the rest of it for whatever they want.  Anybody have any advice on whether I should leave the wood as is with the bark on, or send it to a local sawmill to cut it down to just the dark wood in the center?  Also, the wood is wet because the tree just went down yesterday.  Any advice would be appreciated because I'm clueless.

First off, i would have it quarter sawn at the mill, specify that because of the grain for box calls, secondly I would get some anchor seal and do the entire stack to help from cracking, as it will take time, (6 months for a 2" square X 14" length) to dry properly. Then I would take pics and send out to different call makers and show them exactly what it is you have for trade.
