ive seen people offer to fix poa/poi using factory bead sight. Im looking to do this on my gun. I don't want to put a scope on this one..its for my wife and she is set on the dead ringer sight
exactly how is this done and is this something I can do myself and save time and money?
A lot of people might tell you not to do this but I have done it and it works, bend the barrel between a tree limb just be very careful. Pm me if interested and I'll tell u details
I'd say take it to a HIGHLY trained gunsmith....call me crazy, but I don't think "bending the barrel between two tree limbs" is exactly safe in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.
Is it a $100 beater gun, or a $600 show gun? I would try bending it myself if its just a beater gun and its easy to replace, but if its something nice i wouldnt risk it... I got a 20 guage savage i paid like $80 for. I would probably bend it myself if it werent so dag on accurate.
its a benelli montefeltro..I really hate to bend it between tree limbs, but that's not the first time ive heard that suggested as wild as it sounds
ive got to get it shooting straight somehow..its hitting low/right. if it was high, I could work with it some, but its low and I don't know how to work with that

I would look into the Tru GLo Magnum Gobble
stopper pro series sights. Will correct poi for about $45.00 if gun has a rib....remove later if you don't need them.

Try using the stock adjusting shims first if you haven't already. If you raise the comb it will raise the point of impact. The shims also will adjust for cast, which will move impact left or right. It may get your impact where you need it without having to bend barrel. Also sometimes the choke holes are bored slightly off, maybe see if a different choke changes impact. Good luck I hope you get it shooting straight, Montefeltros are really nice guns!

So that's what's those are for. I remember getting a bag of them and thought it was just something to put in a drawer.
Bought used ad and don't have any shims
Seriously I have a Beretta 391 and I took my stock off to put on a Burris SpeedBead mount for a FastFire sight. Those shims had to be placed in a certain order with similar but different letters on front and bottom and back and front. I had to take a camera and take pics, acording to my book if not assembled correctly it could split my stock.

Shims should be easy to order and not cost much. I really didn't know you use them for point of aim. I thought they were for lenght of pull. Might could run a post in the classifieds on here and pick up some.
The fiber optic sites would be the easiest fix, the ones with point of aim and windage
Tbrady is spot on, just bend it between two tree limbs. I would not try messing with shims.
It could also be that the choke holes were drilled crooked from the factory. This is fairly common.
Yea lets not try the factory engineered shims designed for the purpose of changing the poi, lets bend a barrel between tree limbs. That makes so much more sense. Barrels can be bent as a last resort to change poi, but in this case I would try shims or adjustable sights.
I have to agree with theward, maybe you should try the shims first, but if that dosent work you could pay a gunsmith to bend it between tree limbs or you could bend it between tree limbs for free!!! All joking aside I have seen it done and have done it, that's the way all the old timers used to fix theirs! But yeah give the shims a go
I forgot to mention changing choke tube , someone else did , and change ammo. I tried to change poi with factory shims and had no luck....that was my gun, it might work on yours.
I can honestly say that I've never heard of anyone bending their barrel using a tree! At least not on purpose. Call Benelli and talk to someone. They have always been helpful when I've needed parts or service.
I've heard of bending barrels in that manner , plus the smacking over a inflated truck tire method , and personally I think it stands a good chance of destroying the barrel , also potentially creating a weak spot in the barrel due to a possible dent , and that's going down a road I don't recommend anyone travel
You will find more often than not , that off shooting turkey guns often times have off center choke instalations off center ribs or poorly installed beads , all of these I have owned and used sights to correct
I see Sumtoy offers a POI/POA service. Maybe you should give them a call?
Benelli Legacy/Montefeltro 26" 12ga Barrel
Benelli Legacy/Montefeltro 26 $425.00
Price of a new one if you mess up yours. You don't even know if it's bent, which is most likely not the problem. You didn't mention gauge or barrel lenght, but they were all the same price.
Its your gun, good luck in what you decide.
Brownells carries Benelli shim kits...

This is a classic case of where the old school is better. Now, the barrel is the offending party here, not your stock so the barrel is the part you want to fix. The old timers knew this that is why they straightened the barrel rather than devising a way to move the stock to fit a broken barrel. Now, messing with shims will only help if the barrel is close to poi/poa already. If it is off very far you can forget shims, but you should forget them anyway for best results. Messing with the stock will alter the way the gun points and your sight picture in a negative way and will affect your confidence. I have never known bending a barrel to destroy it and if it did the old timers would not have continued to use that method.
The man already said he did not have any shims, this is a case where you use what you have people. I am sure he can find a stout tree limb or even an old tire as Mr. Old recommended.

Hold on a minute! Now you are going to put a dead ringer sight on this ?
Mounted on the vent rib. The sight if fully adjustable for windage and elevation, is it not?
Why would anyone bend the barrel then?
If not enough adjustment on the sight, could be mounted wrong?
Correct, I am going to put the dead ringer on. I just haven't seen how it will go up/down any yet though. I will find out Friday in Nashville though

Now you guys laugh and it does sound funny but it works and if done right will not cause any damage.
Just like Tbrady said you can bend it yourself with a tree limb for free or pay a gunsmith to bend it between tree limbs or some gunsmiths may prefer to use the bumper of an automobile.

I don't know how the gunsmiths in your area operate..... But there's NO WAY any smith I know would EVER bend a barrel in a tree!!! It's horrible advice.... I don't care if the old timers did it that way or not.... You aren't doing anybody any favors by offering that kind of advice..... As a matter of fact that kind of advice could cause someone to damage their gun or worse damage themself. That's my last post on this thread...I'm out.
Well if your smiths don't use a good forked tree or a truck bumper maybe they use a bag of shot over the tailgate of a truck, that works well also. I am actually quite surprised at the reaction people have had to these methods which have proven to work time and time again. The guy said he did not want to change sights and shims will in all likelihood not provide near enough adjustment. Don't knock these methods until you have tried them. They have all worked time and time again. You guys ever been around any trap shooters?
He already stated what gun he has and I know that model has a rib barrel. What is so bad about gobble dot sights. I sold 2 sets new in the pack on here for $15 each TYD and it might have been drum that bought them. I'am sure it's been done, but why risk it or scratching the barrel, it's not a $75 dollar gun. The funny thing is we're the only ones talking and not him. if I didn't want let loose of a dollar I would see which way it shoots and just aim a little off to compensate for it. Problem solved.
I think Owl is right, if he puts that dead ringer on he probably can adjust it to shoot where it needs to be and will not need to mess with them shims or bend it.
I'm not doing anything until I put the sights on and see and then question dead ringer themselves if I can't get it right.
I was just curious as to how gunsmiths actually fix the poi/poa. Yes, Sumtoy does offer this and maybe he can tell us. I don't see how this is done without bending the bbl in some way
I hope to actually shoot this gun in an hour or so before I leave for Nashville and I will know whether or not I can get it better with the dead ringer sights
No good...still 10"low/10" right.
Still looking to fix this using this sight....pattern was nice though.

So tell me how do you correctly bend a barrel on a tree? Should I find a good oak or is pine better? Would it work if I just gave it one hard swing like I was trying to hit a home run? Maybe throw the barrel in a fire pit for an hour so its easier to bend.
Tell you what....I have some poison on my arm that wont stop itching think it would be a good idea to cut my arm off to make it stop? Saw a big bug in my basement the other day, think I should set my house on fire to get him out?
Is the barrel actually bent? Can you look at the rib on the barrel and the notch on top of the receiver and see if they are lined up straight? I had a Beretta that wouldn't line up there - so the barrel was actually bent. It shot WAY left. Called a very reputable and knowledgeable gunsmith and they said they could bend the barrel but they don't recommend it because most of the time they are like an old water hose, eventually it will go back... In any case, I wouldn't bend the barrel, especially on a benelli. Call benelli.... Try different chokes... If you haven't, try a factory choke at close range and see what it does... Good Luck!
I understand why u guys are laughing, bending the barrel between tree limbs does sound crazy and I shouldn't have posted it bc it is not good advice to give someone, but it does work, a vice will scratch it unless you wrap it in something and then you can't see exactly where you are applying pressure and it will not create a weak spot bc the amount you will need to bend it is so minute, He asked in the original post if there was a way he could fix it his self to save money, I thought I was being helpful, where I come from money is tight and I can't afford to pay a gunsmith 100$ to heat up the barrel and straighten it when I can do it myself. You guys have really bashed me on this idea I had no idea it would upset this many people, I agree I should not have posted it bc some people might be trying this without proper knowledge of what they are doin and could result in injury and I apologize to everyone. Thank you I huntoldschool for sticking up for me on this subject but I think it's clear a lot of people on here have more money than sense
^ your response was actually the same as o was advised by another as well and pretty good source. Its just what is done and I feel most don't ask how it was done when they send a gun out for the poi/poa adjustment.
Tbrady, you are welcome and there was not a thing in the world wrong with your post. We honestly tried to help fountain and I believe the methods we suggested are best for his situation if the sights did not correct his problem. I stand by what you and I posted. The method suggested is the same method most gunsmiths use to straighten barrels. I can understand the post where people would laugh, I get that. But some of the comments are way out of line, just for offering proven techniques to help fix poi. It is easy to jump on someone because their method sounds unconventional or does not follow the party line.
Fountain, since the sights didn't help fix the poi, I would honestly say pm Tbrady, he can explain it better than I can. I would not waste money on shims, they will not fix 10 inches off.
I don't have any problem with Tbrady trying to help a guy out. Gunsmiths do bend barrels to correct poi. They are professionals and have years of experience with the proper equipment to do this. I have seen guys try doing this at turkey shoots themselves, trial and error at best. Trying to bend a ($$) Benelli Crio barrel (extremely hard material) AT HOME between trees is probably not the best course of action. How many degrees per inch do you bend it to correct a 10"x 10" poi at 40 yards ? You don't know that ihuntolschool, do you? Just cross your fingers and keep bending and fatiguing the barrel? And you are wrong about the shims, they can move the poi 10"do a google search and educate yourself on them. Trap, skeet and sporting clay competitors pay big money to have their stocks fitted to them to get the poi shooting where they want. Could be the choke tube is off center in the barrel, and all the bending in the world isn't going to make it right. A good gunsmith can check it out and know for sure. I'm done with this subject............. :deadhorse:
I've talked to several today..rob Roberts says the old schools bending will work to a degree, but it will go back and also you will be aiming weird. I told benelli...all I got was go buy a shim kit. Rob Roberts said shims can't fix it. I figured benellli may offer to take a look or something... but nope. Mr Roberts also said that the earlier m1 20/12 and also sbe 1 were notorious for this. No fix..I'm screwed. Its going to be tru glo mag. pro gobble dot or ff3.....or sell and find an m2. Bout all there is to it.
Dead ringer was not really any help and the way he described to move it all sounded like a gimmick pitch anyway...moving from the front to back of one rib on the gun...that crap ainr gonna move enough to see a difference.
O well...I got an expensive gun that shoots crooked!
I had a m2 that shot 8-10" high and 6"left. The shim kit fixed it.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ok the vent rib raises (ramps) up from the receiver to mid barrel or so. Moving front to back will raise and lower the sight. I don't like it, but there it is.
I don't see how a shim kit would fix this ?? If you are sighting down the rib to the bead wont your eye align back to the bead anyway? Shim for instinctive shooting yes.?
Does the bead sit low ?
I hear ya , i bought a Franchi 720 that shoots very low too. It was used and still high priced, wanted to use for doves , quail , pheasants and clays abit. I thought about bending the barrel , ya for those sneaky turkeys around the tree. I named it ,so i cooled down a bit.
named it , GONE :happy0064:
I told myself the same thing...if your looking down the rib there's no way the shim kit can make a difference...but it did.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Tbrady I hold no judgement on anything you said. All that I said was to the owner of the gun. I feel He does not know why his gun is shooting 10" off. He does not know if his barrel is bent or if the rib and bead is off on the gun or there was a defect where his choke tube is threaded. Plus he owns a gun that is worth more than an old single shot. What you stated was how to spend no money and manipulate a bent barrel. I think the ideal that the owner is clueless is what got this going. Don't feel bashed, everybody is entitled to their opinion.

TRADE FOR DIFFERENT BRAND. :funnyturkey: :z-twocents:
^ I picked up that different brand today and I liked it. Its getting close to season and I need to be doing something fast.
Yea I got a little carried away. I would like to apologize if I offended Tbrady or ihuntolschool, it wasn't my intention to. They were just trying to help out. Not making excuses for myself but I've been on the mend from a health problem and my mood has been a little off lately. Good luck with the gun Fountain, hope you can get a solution! :z-dizzy:
I had a 1100 that shot way off in the early 80's. Gunsmith put it in a vise and whacked it with a rubber mallet a couple of times. Fixed it......until on morning in late April and I coaxed a gobbler up that had earned a nick-name around here and he flew off when I pulled the trigger.
I hung a pop can on a bush (a popular way to evaluate your shotgun back then) at 25 steps. Had a rest on my tailgate and missed the can completly, the barrel had worked itself back to its original problem.
Drove straight to the nearest pawn shop and traded that thing off.
Yeah, I think I bought that old 1100. Where do you live now? :z-guntootsmiley: :z-guntootsmiley: :toothy9:
I had a Nova like this. Gave it away. Glad to see it gone.
