Another post on the board (How many shells do you carry) Got me to thinking
How many and what states require a three shot plug during Turkey Season?
I bout always load three ,but it might keep me out of trouble some day.
Texas does.
I've got a "duck plug" in all my shotguns. Never take them out. Don't have to worry about forgetting them during waterfowl season. If I can't get it done in three tries, forget it.
I pretty much hunt Louisiana and Mississippi and I'm not sure so I plug mine.
Kentucky does
No plug restrictions for turkey's in ark, but are required for waterfowl.
Maryland and Delaware does.
no restrictions in NC
Plug is a PA state law
You need a plug in your shotgun in Washington.
Not in TN, plus with 3.5 inch Nitros I am too busy rolling over backwards after recoil to get a follow-up shot.

Makes sense ;D
I just play it safe and leave the plug in my turkey guns. My 11-87 still has a dogwood limb in it. Had to make one quick when I realized it was required wherever I was at the time.
One shot ,one kill, only usually put 2 shells in, CT requires a plug 3 shells only
No plug in Mississippi- I understand the need for a plug when hunting waterfowl--- wonder what the rationale is for turkey hunting?
Illinois does, why would you need more?
Like catdaddy stated, no plug required in MS. I keep a plug in mine regardless.

I dont need more ! I never put more than 3 in and most of the time 2 is all I load ,but my home state
doesnt require a plug so mines not plugged .But I hunt several states every year and never gave it a thought till now .
So I figured this might be an easy or lazy way to find out without calling all the State DNR offices. ;)

Being from Illinois and a water fowler mine is always plugged!
Maryland Yes
Kansas No
Missouri yep
Alabama requires a plug while hunting all "Game" animals. So I leave it in year round for the Benelli.
The 870 doubles as a home defense gun so I take it out after season.
Ms, I honestly dont know. All mine are plugged so I dont worry about it.
Oklahoma only requires plugs for migratory game birds
Only time my waterfowl gun is unplugged is during snow goose season.....
My turkey guns always have plugs in them regardless where I go and are only ever loaded with 2 shells anyay.

Cause some moron will miss a bird at close range, and keep shooting as it runs or flies away, even when the bird is long out of range... Just like guys do all the time waterfowl hunting with only 3 shells...
I see no reason not to load three shells in the gun. If I could load 5 shells I would, that way I would not have to carry more shells in the vest in case of a catastrophic miss... I would hate to miss a bird, have no more shells in the gun or my pocket, and have a nice tom give me play on the walk of shame back to the car... I have yet to ever fire three shells at a bird, but that is not to say I might not need to at some point...
Plus, I hunt in mountain lion country, and I like the third shell for that very reason...
I would see a benefit to hunting quail and upland with 5 shells though... I could do some damage on the quail as they start popping up in three's or four's... ;D
not required here in Ms.
I always have the gun fully loaded, never know when a coyote or other critter gonna show up

Maryland and Delaware does.
I can not find anything in Delaware regs requiring a plug.
Ohio --yes
Not for turkey's in alabama. Only for migratory birds in alabama.
No plug for turkey or other non migratory game in Virginia.
Not in OK, but since I hunt other states I leave my gun plugged.
Nope for NC
Not in Florida
MO was, so all mine are still plugged. I'm pretty sure Louisiana is a plugged state
California requires a plug for ALL shotgun hunting, even deer/pig hunting with slugs during rifle season when it would be perfectly legal to hunt with 5 cartridges in a rifle magazine.
Doesn't make much sense, but it's not too much of a hardship because I've never fired more than one shot per turkey and there's a one per day limit.
PA yes. I only wish I could take it out when busting crows.

Texas does.
Texas
does not require a plug, except for Migratory birds.
Magazine Capacity
"There are no restrictions on the number of shells or cartridges a legal firearm may hold when hunting game animals or game birds (except migratory game birds, see Legal Shotgun)."
Gman
Louisiana plug all seasons
In NY, there are no restrictions for turkey but waterfowl requires a plug. :turkey2:
Waterfowl only in ms. I don't put but 3 in my gun. Nearly every bird I have killed has been one shot. Only 2 I can think of required a follow up.
Oregon requires a plug for all game bird hunting.
No plug where I hunt. I carry my shells in the gun where they are most useful instead of my vest.

MO, Still does..
3 shells max capability in NJ n NY buy no matter I bring a pocket full of rocks in case I need em
WV is a no unless hunting migratory birds. Plugged mine this year in hopes of quickly tagging out in WV and then going on to hunt MD. Seeing as I'm having a hard enough time trying to even find one that wants to play the game, I may as well be carrying an m249 SAW. Which btw, is legal in the state of WV for turkeys so long as one has the appropriate class 3 permit and shot in a semi automatic fashion.
This topic made me think of an incident from my college days, some 65 years ago, when I was shotgun slug deer hunting in Southern Illinois. In that era, you made-do with the shotgun you had and there were no dedicated ones strictly for whitetails. I had just exited the woods, slipped my shotgun in its case, and was getting ready to leave when the game warden pulled up, strolled over to my car, and asked if I had a plug in my shotgun to which I replied "No". He gave me that "gotcha look" and asked me to uncase my shotgun, which I did, and showed him my double-barrel 20 gauge!
IL...yes

:TooFunny: :TooFunny: That's awesome.
Not in Oklahoma
Yea in Pa. Not sure who is shooting more than 3 times at once at an animal with a daily bag limit of 1 lol

I feel the same about that third shot as I do guns and condoms... I would rather have one and not need one, than need one and not have one... As of yet, I have never had a need or opportunity to use the third shell turkey hunting, and I cannot see the disadvantage of having it in the gun.
Three shots for waterfowl is federally mandated not local... Everything else in California is also three shots. The only game bird I would like to have more for would be quail. There are times when I could do some damage with no plug and quail popping up in one's and two's...
No plug for Wisconsin, unless it's migratory birds.
No plug in VA unless its migratory birds
Indiana - plugs ONLY for migratory birds.
I honestly don't know about TX law on it. I don't take my plug out so it's never come up.
Plus I usually carry a single shot 20 ga nowadays...
Unless I'm hunting snow geese there is no reason for an unplugged gun.
I only put 2 rounds in my turkey gun when I hunt and always have a plug in largely because I don't believe in not having one in and secondly to always be on the right side of the law.
Not required in Maine except for waterfowl. I never take my plug out though so I never have to wonder if it is in there. I always load up the third shell. If nothing else the extra weight helps reduce recoil and every little bit of recoil reduction helps.
