There are a lot of talented callmakers on this site, so I thought it might be interesting to find out which wood combinations you
like the best. I have probably tried 30 or 40 different combinations in the past 10 years but the combo I like the best is
Purpleheart and Mahogany. This combo produces a nice high end with a rollover to a nice raspy finish.
I'm sure there will be a wide variety of opinions on this subject.
Bill
I personally like walnut and butternut.
Great question Bill!
Eric
Walnut over Cedar. Old school sound with an easy rollover and a lighter rasp.
Purpleheart over eastern red cedar in a short box, padauk over black walnut in a long box.
All walnut short box....
Osage over butternut or mineral stained poplar or reclaimed cypress for a long box.
Alaskan yellow cedar scratchbox with a thin walnut striker....
All walnut or walnut over butternut in a short box.
Like Purple Heart over limba in short and long boxes.
Walnut, Butternut,Mahogany, Yellow Heart, Bloodwood, and a fan of any other wood that has a turkey mouth in it
I dont do box calls but my favorite friction combo to make is a slate over slate walnut pot with a hickory striker. Absolute killer combo! :fud:
