Yes, *AFTER* I get one w/my shotgun first.

I started Turkey hunting in 2013, and I've only hunted them with a bow so far. I've called in numberous hens to inside 5 feet of my blind, but while hunting on my own in the blind, every Gobbler has hung up just out of bow range. Enough to drive me batty! Did get one Gobbler last year to inside bow range for me, but I was hunting with my daughter that day & her kill range for 25 yards & while I should have dusted that Gobbler when he got inside my range, I just couldn't shoot it out from under her. THE things dads do for their children! IN the end, we both left empty handed that day. The good thing was, I called the Gobbler into my bow range, which was the first Gobbler in the 2 15 day Michigan seasons I got inside the 40 yard mark.

I'm going to bring the shotgun to the field this year too. If I get lucky on opening morning and a Gobbler comes into my set, then I'll dust him with the bow. However, I'm planning on being mobile this year and going off after them with my shotgun IF they don't cooperate.

My original goal was to take my first Gobble with my bow, but I'm "adjusting" that goal! Time will tell AS to how that first Gobbler falls!

It doesn't look like there's a cap on how many we can have on our team. But only the 9 biggest turkeys will count toward the contest.

Welcome ScottS!

Back to the bowhunting....

I shoot my bow year round and am comfortable on a vital area the size of a turkey's at 60 yards. I would never take that shot at a whitetail because they tend to move by the time the arrow makes it. Is it the same with turkeys? Should I limit shot distance to their ability to move or will they stay pretty still when they hear string whip?

Hey everyone thanks for allowing me to join the team! I live in amarillo, tx originally from the waco, tx area and I've been chasing turkeys since my first hunt with a regional director of the NWTF about five years ago. Since then I've managed to get five on the ground but I still consider my self a "know nothing" turkey hunter. I already got the notice that I was drawn for a WMA hunt here in Texas and I have land in oklahoma I can hunt and if that doesn't work out I can go down to the waco area and hunt some places down there so hopefully I can help the team out. Turkey season can't come fast enough!

Welcome to the team!  I like the idea of having a couple guys who may have some experience.  Even though we are a team of "noobs" it would be nice to have one or two somewhat experienced guys on the team to give some advice...etc!

Here are a couple of the beards on camera in the last month or so.  Dozens of turkeys in this field everyday. Maybe more toms as well but it's hard to see any detail past 20 yards on that time lapse camera.

BGD,

I applaud you for taking a mentorship role on your team. As a former co-captain I would like to make you aware of something you are missing. Pictures! Trust me this will be your teams biggest hurdle. If all of your guys are not on the same page regarding pictures, you can kill 50 turkeys a piece and it won't do you a bit of good. This is a photography contest as much as it is a turkey contest and make no mistake, if you post one entry that does not have perfect pictures in it, there is going to be some tool PM the admin and try to have your entry thrown out. Been there and done that. My guys were really good with the pic thing while we were in it but we were all on the same page regarding the sites expectations...... and we still had some entries contested. Even had one bird DQ'd last year.

Trust me. of all the good advice you have been giving you need so spend some time on pictures and the correct way to take them. All of you will have to be on the same page regarding pics or you will pay for it in the end.

Well team I have to apologize tonight. It was opening day in Mississippi and I opted to bring the shotgun over my bow. Had a great morning, saw a handful of birds.  After 5 hours of sitting motionless with my shotgun at the ready, I needed to stretch. I put the gun down for less than two minutes and a big Tom flies down to my decoys 15 yards away. I made a move for the gun but he caught me. The first picture is the bird trotting away after pegging me (look to the right of the image).  Since the resolution is bad on the time lapse I checked the previous day to see if I could see them coming to the roost. Seems there were a few beards yesterday so it could have been one of them. Sorry guys.

Heard 22 gobbles Saturday morning but only put eyes on 3 jakes that got within 15 steps of me. Plenty of sign. The hunt continues. I made a video of my calling on a lights out hackberry ceramic pot I just bought. I'm new to calling so please critique.

Efey stay after 'em; it's good that you're hearing gobblers & seeing jakes!

Re: calling, watch this: https://youtu.be/YFLj5ynJnNc ...  Your slate sounds really good, just slow down a little bit on your yelps, like I'm doing in this video...

Good luck!!

Thanks BGD!!!

You're welcome, bud; you're doing good, man; stay on 'em!!!

So break this down for me. When I should call and when I shouldn't.

This was my Saturday hunt:

I snuck into the woods an hour before daylight. Set out two hen decoys in the plot.

At daybreak the gobbling began to the SE of me at what sounded to be 150ish yards and another at what seemed a little further in the same direction. Both birds gobbled many times and I remained quiet assuming they would work to the field.  They got quiet for a bit before gobbling a few last times at which point a gave a few yelps and shut up. They never made their way over. The 3 jakes came from the NW.

Should I have called more? Earlier? Not at all? Moved in on them? How should that have played out for me if I were experienced?

kill thread posted and someone already added one?

Thanks for stepping up.

Sorry I haven't been on often, but I am in, only have a 5 day season, but have taken vaca and cleared my weekend to hunt all 5 days.  Also got in on a "NWTF Learn to Hunt" program to hunt an extra day.  Funny a guy who has hunted for 35 years gets in on a learn to hunt program simply since I never hunted turkey LOL

I'm in NY and our season doesn't start until May 1st. We have a limit of two toms, one per day. I'm hoping to at least get a jake this year due to circumstances of logging going on in my only area to hunt. Last year it was actually good...I got chance at 4 toms...two busted me and I froze when I should have shot, one I had a misfire on the ammo when i pulled the trigger (i was so pissed) and the 4th hung up at about 50 yards. I have to admit...I was strictly a deer hunter for 5 years now but damn...turkey hunting is a blast!!!

Heading out tomorrow for a "rookie" hunt, heard quite a few gobblers in the morning and saw more than 40 tonight 2 larger rafters and a trio of mature toms. We will hit the 3 toms early, the other seem to be henned up and will use them as plan b.

Well I struck out this morning. Birds were roosted on the property line with a gang of hens. Gobbled there heads off on the limb hit the ground gobbled once then took off the opposite direction with the hens. Why does turkey hunting have to be so frustrating.

I didn't hear or see a thing this morning. Nasty weather for it. Plenty of tracks on the ground but camera shows no activity in normal areas for last few days. Wonder what's up

Well I scored. Not a big bird but a 2 year old.  Will try to up load the other pics.  I have another tag, and 5 more days I about 3 weeks so not sure if this bird is what I want to submit. Only 19.5 lbs and spurs under an inch. 9" beard.

Is there a time frame to submit?  Looks like 54.375

Well I reviewed camera footage and I have turkey activity up until the middle of last week when a coyote started showing up. The yote has been on camera everyday since. Is my season over? Seems like the birds wouldn't hang around that.

Go kill the yote then kill your gobbler, keep at em!

Just hear a new way to hunt yotes in plains and praries.  Blow a dog whistle and shoot them in the head when they pick their head up to see what's going on.  Don't have many flat areas here but it sounds intriguing.

Things didn't go my way this morning. I got in there close to the roost and the hens were there but no gobbler. I'll try again in the morning.
