Title: Gene Howe WMA
Post by: ScottS on January 13, 2015, 06:24:18 PM
Got the email today stating I was drawn for a permit to hunt the Gene Howe WMA up in the northeastern Texas panhandle. Anyone here ever hunted that WMA and if you have would you be willing to part with some insight on that hunt. It's the fourth year I have put in for it and I'm pumped for a nice weekend away by myself chasing longboards!

Anyone have any pointers on which compartment is best if I have the choice to choose one.

Hadn't even heard of the place.  Interesting regulations though,....no hunting within 200 yards of a roosted turkey.  That would make things a bit interesting.  I guess a hunter is supposed to know where every roosted turkey is on the WMA when hunting there?    :o

They had the draw already?  I guess since I didn't revive any emails I didn't draw for the 3 areas I put in for.

Good luck with your hunt!!

This will be my first time up there so it will be a learning experience, I know nothing about the place.

Jan 12th was the deadline to put in for it so they may still have second draws to pull. I don't know exactly how the process works but I wouldn't give up hope yet.

I haven't been to Gene Howe but I've hunted areas in W. OK that I think are probably similar.  The birds roost along the draws, creeks and river bottoms where they have trees.  There aren't many trees so finding roosts shouldn't be hard.  Take binoculars and glass from high areas to find where the birds are going after flydown.
You really don't want to booger up a roost.  Those Rios tend to use them repeatedly so you don't want to mess one up.  They don't mind a little calling either, in my experience.
Use google earth and topo maps to find the drains and low areas with trees and start there.
I put in for Gene Howe a couple of times and never got drawn.  I don't know if my preference points are still good or not.  I may look into it again next year. Good luck.

I also have hunted western Oklahoma and loved it, this was my fourth year to put in for gene Howe and my first time to be drawn. I'm hoping I will be allowed to do some pre scouting before the hunt so I can figure out the area.

I called them to find out what the 2nd draw was. Apparently if a chosen winner does not claim their hunt they draw again.
