Title: best box call $$$$
Post by: daymude7288 on December 27, 2014, 10:59:23 PM
Just wondering what you guys think on which is the best box call for the money??  Have had a bunch of cheap ones but want something a little better.  Try to keep it under $80.  Uncle Sam don't pay all to well.

SS custom calls sells two styles of field grade boxes for $55 and $60. I have three and they sound great. They will work with you to get the sound that you want. Great people. Ken

SS Custom calls. I have about 8 of their calls and they are all great calls. Call and talk to Al and tell him the sound that you prefer and he will hook you up with a wood combo that best describes your needs. A few of my favorites are maple/Mahogany, kwila/butternut, maple/mineral poplar or kwila/limba. Most of the ones that i have are the field grade calls. They build a really nice longbox also.

SS boys get my vote also. I have one of their field boxes in Kwila over Limba and it is a fine call.

Looks like you have already been given the suggestion of SS Custom Calls.....and of course I agree!   There plan and simply awesome!!!  They are a game changer!!  Also do yourself a favor and check out there pot calls....I love there slate over glass and I've tried a lot in my 24 yrs turkey hunting and nothing comes close to the sound of this call.  It help bring 5 long beards to my gun last yr just an unbelievably awesome call at a great price!  Al and Josh has come out with a new line of pot calls and I will soon have my hands on a couple and can't wait!  Al and Josh are top notch Christian brothers and call makers I Highly recommend them!!!!

God bless

I collect box calls, I consistently kill turkeys with box calls, I build and sell box calls and I'm still impressed each time I pick up my SS box and run it. Best investment I made period as I started learning the craft. I killed two Gobblers with it and then studied it top to bottom inside and out. It stays on my bench with in reach and is ran as comparison a lot along with a Dad's and a Albert Paul. It is perfection in my mind and a true hunting call. Al will never know how much he taught me. Not only is the sound there his craftsmanship and checkering is some of the best in the business which was priceless to me as I learned.  When you get it learn how to run it the right way, Work at it and you'll get the most out of it. This has to be learned just like any other call.   I vote SS  Best whishes

Jeff

As much as I hate to go against those in favor of SS game calls, I personally like Bradley Custom Calls. Hoot makes some great boxes. Best Wishes!

I to have a box from the ss guys an a slate fine calls. Another couple fellas also to consider would be Frank Kruer. An Jeff Lacey of shag hill custom calls both make great calls . You honestly can't go wrong with most of the call makers on here some mighty fine ones. Good luck with your search on getting a call.

Totally forgot about Frank!  If he's still at $75 for a box then he and SS would be neck and neck in my opinion.  Also, if you're ever in/around the Atlanta area look up Lonnie Mabry;  he makes great calls and they're ridiculously underpriced, he's $50 for a checkered box.  I was in the Atlanta area about a month and a half ago, paid Mr. Mabry a visit, and left 4 hours, 3 box calls, 2 pot calls, a scratchbox, wingbone, and cane yelper later - all to the tun of about $225. Some of the finest calls I've played; if you can get to him it's well worth the trip, he doesn't ship any calls so you'll have to stop by if ya want one.  Good luck in your search and let us know what ya get!

SS calls for what your looking to spend in there field grade call is a great choice IMO.  Frank Kruer makes good ones too, just not sure what his prices are today.

Al and Josh put the same quality and consistency into their field grade calls as they do in every call they make and they have been doing so for a long time. I've listened to a lot of them over the years and have never heard any I didn't like.

I just want y'all to know that I was so impressed by this thread here that I just mailed a check to Al for a butternut/kwila square end field grade box.

Al did the picking.

I told him volume wasn't going to be a problem, but I wanted the most scintillating box he had.  My turkeys have to put up with me for a full week at the front end of the season and then weekends after that. To be successful, I need to be like the housewife that shows up at the door dressed in saran wrap and high heels, ready to hand her hubby a martini by the end of season.

. . . ewwwww! I just read that last sentence. The thought of me in saran wrap. . .    Well, you get the idea.  :P

You're getting a great call in a great combo from great callmakers.  I would have gotten it with rounded ends though.   ;D

Speaking on the phone with Mr. Al is a true pleasure.  I am certain you will be very satisfied with your box.  Got one coming my way as well for my boy's birthday, but I went with Butternut/Maple off of dirt road ninja's and Mr. Al's suggestion.  More excited than if it was for me!

A fine call, you won't be disappointed. Another call maker - Wendel Lancaster spoke very highly of SS 's boxes. He seemed to be a good reference. I purchased 4 of Al's calls a few months ago and I can honestly say the range from very good to great. Definitely in the same class as calls I've spent 100's on.
