Title: Call Making Wood
Post by: ccaldwell on December 21, 2014, 11:45:13 PM
All you guys who make calls, where do you find is the cheapest place to buy wood? I am wanting to start messing around with making box calls and was needing some advice.

Also, what would be the best wood to practice with? I know I will definitely be wasting some wood while I am learning.

Poplar is probably the best wood to start with. Mostly because it's readily available and easy to work with. Probably with walnut for the lid because of the same reasons above. Good luck,

Joe

You can get poplar at Lowes or Home Depot to start with, some is actually pretty good when you can find it. They also have boards of cherry that you can use for a paddle

Call Ken Shipley or look him up online at Custom sawing, Cadiz KY. Poplar 2x2x12 dried blanks are like $3  and he knows what you need grainwise. Good place to get started
