Sat up the other morning in a new wheat field along a creek bottom. The hill behind me became very lively with turkey chatter as the sun came up. One by one I could hear birds come alive, then like I was sitting at the end of a runway, bird after bird came pitching off the limb into the little 1/2 acre field. Had 13 total, all hens and poults. Some as close as just a few yards. Probably hung around a good 30 minutes before heading up the field road to the bean field. Never pulled the trigger in hopes that this weekend I can take my 8 yr old son and let him have a crack at a couple.(2 bird limit/either sex here in MO) Sure was entertaining watchin them interact with each other and listening to all the sounds turkeys make.
Sounds fantastic. Good luck. Hope you make a great memory!!
Good luck! It has been a successful fall turkey season for me as I've taken my first archery Tom here in Indiana. The birds have been very vocal and easy to talk to. That always makes it enjoyable. It was quite an experience having the lead hen come within 20 yards of me yelping and cutting looking for the competition. It really helps you get an idea of what the birds sound like in your area.
Nothing better than hearing the woods come alive with turkey chatter especially.....
That took some willpower. I hope it works out for you and your son!
