Title: Coal wood call
Post by: firedup on October 01, 2014, 09:08:36 PM
I was really thrilled to get a chance to do this one.  I am a WV boy living in the heart of coal country.  A good friend brought me an old red oak rail track tie out of an old underground mine. This mine was worked in the 20's and the track tie has been laying underwater in the old mine since then.  He asked if I could make a few calls from it.  Cool I thought!  After much drying and figuring here are the results.  The oak is black from being underwater in the old mine. No staining or alterations have been done and boy did it stink when you worked it.

Mineral Poplar call with Mine Oak base and lid.  Holly accents.

A pot call and scratch box presentation set with some background info.  Base is rough cut walnut header block from KY mine used to set cribbing and bolt roof. Lump coal is from the actual mine. Other material used: tiger maple / paduak / elk antler and 1/4 sawn sycamore
