Title: New Gooserbat Pots
Post by: Gooserbat on September 22, 2014, 04:28:32 PM
I'm glad that I have finally gotten a standardized pot call finished for the coming year.  Hickory pot with either slate, glass, or aluminum.  I chose Hickory for it's toughens, and you don't see a whole lot of premium calls out of it.  Yes I said premium call because there is a difference between premium and custom.

I'll ask... what is the difference between premium and custom?

As a call maker I consider Custom to be just that, a one of a kind call.  Be it something the call maker puts together at his discretion or a call that was ordered a certain way by the customer It may be built to achieve a certain sound or a certain cosmetic appeal, or in all likelihood both.

Premium on the other hand is a call that is built by hand but at the same time it's more standardized and the call maker probably reproduces the same call.  It's still hand tuned, hand built and will be a very good call but it will lack the personal detail in exacting details that will set it apart from other pieces built by the same call maker.  It also will sound pretty similar on call to another as long as the materials are kept the same.

You and I both know a pot isn't but that was a generalized statement but I should have pointed it toward box calls.

I've tuned a few pots before. You shave a little off the bottom or the sides and it makes it better.

Joe once again you're right.  That's probably more effort than most will do and what sounds less than grand to one much of the time sounds great to the next.
