Title: Opening day in FLA
Post by: FLplaneMECH on March 19, 2011, 11:14:25 AM
Arrived at Bull Creek WMA at 0430. At my spot at 0530. Cold morning. Not a peep til sun was just breaking. Heard a few hen calls and gobbles to some owl hoots...but nothing close by. Switched hides and threw out a few chirps when...a hen comes in view. She was so close I could have touched her with my gun. She putted and chirped and pecked and scratched but didn't call loud enough to bring any jakes in. That was the only action. Left at 0930. On the way out, I stopped at the check-in and saw 7 were taken today. Largest was almost 18 lbs. with a 10" beard and 1 1/4 spurs.

Sounds like a typical day on a FLA WMA that doesn't require permits. I know from experience that it is very hard hunting on those places. But from time to time you can score on a good one. Good luck on the rest of your hunts!! :anim_25:

I work in Orlando and about a 5 min drive from there in an old pasture I can see huge Toms strutin no more than 30 feet from the road...and on the drive in on 528...dude turkeys everywhere on the Mormon ranches on either side of the road...its sick you have to go to these WMA hours from your home just to hunt when you have turkeys in your backyard...stupid if you ask me.

Just my $.02,

Dave

YES florida Sucks when it comes to private land and spring turkey. all the land owners know that they can get big bucks for the osceola turkey hunts.

The hardest turkey to kill is a public land bird.
Went out yesterday and today and both days got messed up by other hunters.
The air boats on the river where so loud we couldn't even here the birds.
It was so much fun, I am going back for more tomorrow.
