Title: Painted shotgun sealing question
Post by: decoykrvr on August 19, 2014, 01:32:18 PM
Turkey season is over and I'm bored!!  With that in mind, I recently bought a Weatherby PA-459 TR, 20 gauge to set-up as a turkey gun.  The gun is all black w/ a pistol grip synthetic stock and forearm and matte black finish on the metal.  On the advise of several folks on Old Gobbler, I've already obtained a Carlson's .575 turkey choke and several boxes of Federal HW 7's.  If  patterning goes as well as I hope it does, I plan on doing a camo job on the gun similar to the military Multi-Cam pattern.  I camo'd my first shotgun over 30 years ago, but as some of you have experienced, the painted camo surface isn't very durable.  I've used Defthane polyurethane satin on the refinished wood stocks of numerous duck guns (9-12 coats hand-rubbed like Tru-oil then lightly sanded w/ 400-600 grit paper) with great results for a flat-satin waterproof, weather resistant finish. I've never used the Deft polyurethane on anything but wood and there is nothing on the label to indicate it's suitability on anything but wood.  My question is: What brand of flat sealing finish works best on painted metal/plastic surfaces.

I know Krylon has a clear matte acrylic aerosal can. Then there is also a Hi temp ceramic spray in clear matte.

Krylon Fusion for plastic adheres better than anything I've used. It not only works on synthetic stocks but also on metal.

I've put the matte clear over the original paint but I'm not sure it's necessary. The matte will impart a bit of a shine. You can dull that with 0000 steel wool however.

Thanks,
Clark

Brownell's makes a spray epoxy product called Alumi-Hyde II in Clear Matt. For best results, you need to follow the instructions pretty closely. When I need a tough, impervious top coating to protect a paint job, this is what I would use.
