Title: B-17 Sentimental Journey (photo heavy)
Post by: alloutdoors on August 16, 2014, 08:04:54 PM
Went to our local Aerosciences Museum today, they are celebrating their 30th anniversary and the B-17 Sentimental Journey has been on hand all week. It was my first chance to tour inside a B-17, pretty cool to say the least. I didn't take any photos inside the plane as there were a lot of people trying to get through and see it, but I took quite a few outside.

At the end of the day they fired her up and took a group out for a flight.

While we were there a P-51 and T-6 Texan (Navy variant) flew in for a short visit.

Uncle Gene flew a B-17 and Uncle Paul flew a B-24. Both survived the war but are gone now.

Thanks for the pictures and the memories.

During ww2 it took a real pair and some determination to climb into any one of those packed with high explosives , topped up with high octane fuel and fly it over Nazi occupied Europe all whilst some of the most experienced enemy fighter pilots are chucking everything they have at you

teenagers or just a little past that accomplished that - it was a very dangerous duty , deserving of the highest gratitude and respect

Great pictures!  I see you're enjoying being near your grandson now. :icon_thumright:

We toured a flight museum in Galveston a couple of weeks back.  They had one of those and a Navy variant.  I wonder how loud it got in the cockpit when the top gunner and nose gunner were blasting away!  I got to tour one and was amazed how little there was inside to destroy.  If a bullet didn't hit the pilot, fuel tank or line, it probably would take down the aircraft.  I love looking at those old planes and the nose art.

I love P-51's

Same here, I'm pretty sure I looked like a little kid on Christmas morning when that one flew in and touched down. That particular Mustang resides at an airfield within about 30 minutes of my house.
