Now that we are official, I thought a thread where we could check in once a week or so might be a good idea.
You guys that are already hunting can share how you are doing good or bad. And tell us when you are going to another state.
The rest of us can post when we are about to head to the woods.
Maybe post about son, daughters, family, or friends hunts.
I have 3 son i will be calling for.
Basically just keep in touch.
Be Safe and have Fun! :turkey2:

Congrats on a fine season! Me and LilFrid hope to get out this weekend to hear first gobbles of the year.
I am checking in! Season don't start for me till next month the 16th, but I will be in 3 states this year! Went scouting on some farms yesterday and seen over 30 strutters and heard about 50 from the truck. Got some great video of birds strutting their butts off!
Woods were DEAD Saturday. Couldn't get anything to talk. Oh well, that's huntin! :fud: :newmascot:
Made sure the gun was shooting good this weekend and that is a check. Just getting everything together and gathering intel from my father-in-law on where the birds are and when. A week from this coming friday I will be in the woods trying to add to our total! Good Luck!
As of now I think we are in 5th place out of 16 teams. That is with one bird, thanks turkeykiller22, a really good one bird. I think that a few of the teams ahead of us have multiple guys in the woods already. Will not be long before more of us get out. I really like our chances. Good Luck and collect the team a set or two of spurs!
Yeah I was thinkin the same thing. If we are in 5th place and most of our team isn't even hunting yet. Look Out! :z-guntootsmiley:
I killed one St. Paddy's day. All was good until I got thru cleaning it & forgot that I didn't weigh it...WTF!
Thats ok just go kill bigger one, ;D ;D :z-guntootsmiley:

No biggie. I was going to pattern my 20 gauge when Saturday and when I got ready I realized I let the shells at home. :TooFunny:
Unfortunately Ive had a wicked ear infection for our opening weekend....I still went saturday, but it felt like the inside of my blind was a tilt-a-whirl after my ear popped blowing my nose. Had a bird walk out at about 75. Oh well, the season's still young!
blackmagic take care of yourself and get well!
Then get back after them.
:fud: :newmascot:
Hunted this past weekend for the opener. Heard some gobbling early saturday but no cooperation. I'm heading out tomorrow morning for a quick hunt before work. We'll see what happens!
kdavis31 Good luck tomorrow!!
Good luck. Hope you get one with a rope and limbhangers! :z-guntootsmiley:

Hopefully they'll be cooperating this weekend! On a good note, my hearing's back, so I can get into the game.

Glad to hear you are feeling better. One week for me and then I will be trying to put us a bird on the board. Got a couple hunts planned with some veteran hunters this spring so hopefully I can do my part to help us win this contest!
10 more days for me. :fud: :newmascot:
Please forgive me in advance if a jake walks out...... :fud: :newmascot:
This weather is nuts, early this week it was 78 today it's snowing :bike2:
85 and sunny here. Of course, this is Florida. We're just happy it's not high 90's and 90+% humidity. As for my hunt to day, had to do a quicky and had fun getting into hen fighting matches. Had one try to charge me and came within a foot or two of being in my lap.
Slow weekend in the woods for birds gobbling. Yesterday morning saw a hen. I walked up on a gobbler that had died of unknown causes. No apparent gunshot wounds, had a broken wing though. He was sporting about a 10" beard and approx. 1" spurs. This morning I had 4 party crashers of the bovine kind decide to join me. The gobblers seem to be in a quiet cycle. Hopefully it will turn around for next weekend.
More hens today. Birds are still quiet where I'm at Keith. They were on fire the week before season. They can't stay in this funky quiet mode forever...or can they :gobble:
The weather this week ought to change things.
Well fellows this weekend is the start of the season for me here in SC. I will be leaving after work to go to where I hunt on Thursday to hopefully find me a bird for Friday morning. Do not know how much I will be able to get on here until Sunday evening but I will try to keep you updated and if I get a bird post it as quickly as I can. Those of you already hunting good luck and those of you still waiting I know the feeling and it will not be long.
We got on a loud mouth early Saturday morning. He would gobble at anything and everything. From before daylight to about 7:30 Strutting on the limb and gobbling. He flew out to my left and I aint seen him since. :TrainWreck1: Oh well, it was good to be there and hear and see him. God is good! <>< del
Just spoke with my father-in-law and he gave me some good recon on what he says is a good bird. He said he thinks it is bigger than the one I killed last year in the exact same area, that bird was 20 pounds with an 11" beard and 1"spurs. Hopefully he is right. He thinks he is roosting in an area where my last year bird roosted. Was happy to get this information. Still plan on getting out to the fields on Thursday to find what tree he might be in! :z-guntootsmiley:
davisd9
Shoot him and take his picture! ;D
7 more days......................... :toothy12: :toothy12:
West Virginia still has 28 days until the start of the season. My brother and I are thinkin about drivin to Kentucky to daniel boone national forest. Its across the river from huntington so its close. Good luck everyone! :z-guntootsmiley:

davisd9 Good luck! Kill a big old tom and be safe.

Then the Michigan opener. :icon_thumright:
But I did wrap up a spot for Ohio in May. :z-winnersmiley:
Come on Spring! :z-guntootsmiley:
Leaving in about 20 minutes to start heading on the 2 hr drive home. When I get there I am going to look for a bird for in the morning. The weather is supposed to be kind of nasty this evening so I do not know if I will have any luck getting one on the limb but tomorrow is going to be nice and I have all weekend. Good luck to whoever else is going. Will keep ya'll up to date when I can.
FireDoc love the pics you been posting.
Good luck this year!!
Well......... turkey season has come to southern Illinois, looks like I'm going to have some awesome weather.......winds14-20mph gusts of 34...... 100% chance of rain and severe thunderstorms.
Can't wait! :z-guntootsmiley: :z-guntootsmiley:
Killed another double bearded turkey this morning!! Walked up the mountain in the dark and one gobbled about 100 still up the mountain. I set up on him started calling and two more bird came in from below me. Shot him at 42 yards, double bearded 8.5in and the other was about 5in. 1 in spurs on him!!! Its my 3 bird of the year, and second that has been double bearded!!!
You got your name right you are a turkeykiller!!
Congrats!! :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:
Congrats Turkeykiller :you_rock:
I managed to call a pair of studs in yesterday following 4 hens. Unfortunately they came in from behind me and the hens walked by at 4ft and to the front and the gobblers were 8ft off and slightly behind my left shoulder. One was drumming and strutting while the other just stared. When he gobbled that close, it almost made me jump out of my chair....i'll get one sooner or later :'(
Well fellows Friday morning was great. Thursday evening I got to a field and there was 2 strutters with 3 hens dancing in the field. I stalked them until they flew up so I would know where the big boy of the group was. Got there early Friday morning, 6:00 am, and set up. A 10 minutes till 7:00 he started hammering. At 5 til 7 I yelped and he started double gobbling on the limb. At 7:00 he hit the ground and started strutting to me gobbling. I would call he would dance and gobble. At 60 yards he hung up, walked back 10 yards, then came back for 20 minutes. Finally he cut to the left and I thought he was circling around so once he got into some higher weeds I repositioned. Heard him gobble and he was close. The I see a bird walk out in front of me cross the small tree line I was in going to the decoy. When he got to 50 yards he got nervous. Did not run off but I think he was figuring out that she mobile was a little to pretty. So He acted like he was about to run, and I rushed a shot a missed. That is not the bad part. Some how this was a different bird that got me confused cause when I shot twice, something to my left caught my eye and it was the strutter about 35 yards out. :'( He saw be swing the gun and was off. Later that morning I slipped up on 3 two year olds feeding at 37 yards and was set up for a shot, but they were behind a limb that I could not shoot through and never stepped out the the open, three steps would have done it but that is turkey hunting for you. Friday was the best day, but saw and heard a lot of birds all weekend long. Hope that you guys had as good as a weekend as I did.
My woods were DEAD Saturday. Oh well, more time ahead.
Shot one today! 10 1/4 beard 7/8 spurs 20lbs 8ozs

Mine was not very happy either, but i ask her if she rather take her new digital camera outside in the rain. ;D
Sunday the wind blew hard all day, I thought it was going to slow down by dark but it only blew harder. I planned on roosting one sunday night, but quickly gave up on that idea. The weather forcast for tomorrow was for severe thunderstorms. Decided to get up and look at the radar and go from there, surely it was not going to rain all day. I was up at 5:00 am look at the radar, heavy rain to the north and light rain to the south, looked like might have two or three hours of dry weather so I took off. Sprinkle on the way there, but it stop before long. The wind was not blowing as hard so that was good, might be able to hear one if they where gobbling. Didn't have any idea where they be roosted, didn't think they would be gobbling anyway. Owled a couple of times all I heard was another owl, decided to go set on the edge of a field where I seen turkeys before, as I was going there I heard a faint gobble. Headed for the gobbler and set up about 150 to 200 yds. from him on the edge of a open green field thinking that he would fly down into it. He didn't, he flew down in a pipe line right of way that runs east and west, gobbling his head off. I yelp to him to let him know I'm over here, purr and he gobbled back. There's a big ditch over where he flew down I was afraid I was on the wrong side. I was wanting to move, kicking myself for not getting closer. Decided to stay put, when I hear raspy yelping to the east, thought another hunter had heard him and was moving in on him, it is public ground. I now was wishing I was a lot closer to him, about that time I see him fanned out in the edge of the pipe line right of way and two hens in the field. Yelped at him and he came quickly, they all moved through a low spot in the field. lost sight of him, next thing I know he is all most past me . I see the top of his fan I swing to my left about the time his head popped out, sent a load of winchester #5 at him and he disappeared. Walked over and stood on his head and call my wife to tell her I got one because she thought I was nuts for going. That raspy yelping must of been a hen, I didn't see any one else. Beat the rain boy was I happy!
Sounds like you had a heck of a hunt. Congratulations again.
:z-guntootsmiley: :z-guntootsmiley: Congrats on the bird JVA 54!
Well fellows I am getting back out there first thing in the morning. Going with a friend in the morning that doubled yesterday afternoon. Sure hope my wife makes it through this turkey season, after me fanning out my turkey on her hardwood floor that I had not planed on telling her about, forgot those pics where on her camera. The other morning she came into the bedroom before she had to go work and ask if I could do her a small favor, I said sure, can you move that turkey beard off her kitchen table it's making me want to throw up! I told her I guess I could put it in the bedroom, ;D she didn't think that was funny. After my son killed his Jake I put it's beard on the table with out thinking and she came home and said I thought we talked about this.................. :help:
12 more days until WV season starts. Can't wait and yes it has been killing me to wait this long. Good thing though is the weather has been cold so its keeping the turkeys from going at it. Good luck everyone! :fud: :newmascot:

Killed number 4 yesterday!!! Well kind of hahaha... so here the story, so its kinda long. So one of my friends over here at college tells me that her dad is a big turkey hunter! (they are from florida!) So one day before spring break I was joking around with her telling her to call her dad and see if he would take me turkey hunting sometime! Well a few days later she texted me and said "He said he would take you, if you take him!" I was pumped! I was like well give me a time, and he can choose which state, AL, TN, Or Ms. So he emailed me the next day saying he would be heading to missouri and he would like to stop by and hunt the weekend in TN. So we planned on that. Well I told him where the key to the gate was, since I would be driving in from school and he would get there before me. So friday night I met him up at the farm. He said he had seen 3 gobblers driving up the road, but could not do anything with them when he hunted.... So the next morning he wanted to go by himself and sit in his blind for a few hours. So we met back at the cabin around lunch or so, shared our mornings stories, and then proceeded to eat some lunch! After eating we decided to hop in the truck and drive around to the backside of the farm to see if we could see one in a neighboring field, and call him across. Well there wasnt a bird out in the field, so we decided to park and walk up to the foodplot where I had called in a bird earlier that morning. Well before I had time to step out of the truck one gobbled over on the neighbors place. So we set up close to line, and tried to call him over.... mean while I texted dad and asked him to give the neighbor a call and see if we could go hunt that bird. Well after about 30 mins and the bird not coming I received word we could go hunt him!!! So off we went, we were walking down a road when looked to the left and there he was 50 yds!! We both just hit the dirt praying he didnt see us. We crawled up to the fence and sure enough he was just feeding away from us with some hens. After crawling out there to stick a decoy out, trying every call I had, the bird would NOT come in. We go lucky and the hens started coming our way... well when they got about 50 yds, and the gobbler was 60 yds they turned around and decided to leave. So The next thing I know, Dutch shoots, immediately I take off running into the field. All the birds including the gobbler take off flying. So I start running following him. I stopped about 100 yds into the field, grab my binos and marked where he went down at. It was 8-900 yds. So I grabbed my vest and we decided to go look for the bird. Sure enough the bird was right where I marked him at! As im walking up to him he takes off flying again, but the 3.5in shell at a mere 15 feet did the trick this time!! We were so excited, especially when we found out he had 3 beards!! Measurements were 10.5inches, 9.75inches, and .5 inches. 1 1/16 in spurs and 19 lbs!!! It was an awesome hunt!!
Congrats!! turkeykiller22
Got one for us today. 17.5 lbs, 1 1/8" spurs, and 10.5" beard. :z-guntootsmiley:
Congrats on an awesome bird!!!! Now we only need 7 more!!
Well guys I've let y'all down in FL. It was really a strange season. Seems like the birds started way early then just got lock jaw. Yesterday and today's hunts started with some excitement but died off quickly. Yesterday there was an argument with a hen between me and the gobbler. Today two gobblers were going crazy on the limb then flew down the other direction. Oh well, that's what happens sometimes. I'm going to hunt NH opening weekend of the season up there, so there's still a chance ill put something on the scoreboard.
Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
kdavis31 That's turkey hunting and could happen to any one of us.
I was a little hesitant to get in this contest the way turkeys have been kicking my butt the last few years, this year has been the best turkey hunting I have had in a long time. Good luck in NH.
Right now our total score with 3 birds is 202.50. Good luck guys.
Well, I'm with kdavis....had some very very close calls, and saw some awesome things in the woods again, but they bested me in the Florida swamps. Few weeks ago called in 2 birds and watched as they drummed and gobbled 8ft from the back of my head (of course gun was pointed in the wrong direction). Spent the first couple of weeks with a dang ear infection and on the days I felt OK to go, I couldn't hear for squat. And of course had a gobbler walk by I only caught the tail end of. Even saw a hen with poults this past weekend.
The birds were on fire the 2 weeks before season...unfortunately, they were very tight lipped for our season in Central Fl. It was a weird season.
Go get 'em!
I will be hunting Illinois 5Th season this weekend with my son, going to let him have first shot because he kill a Jake his first season. :z-guntootsmiley:
Saturday is the last day for us here in SC. Going to see if I can get us an upgrade. Just glad I got us one and glad I was able to get out in the woods as much as I have. It has been a great season! Good luck to everyone!
Hey fellas....Just checking in.
Been hard at it, hunting various States and have more trips on the docket. Will get some scores posted soon, and some recaps.
Good luck to all of you! :gobble:
Well it's over here in Mississippi. I didn't shoot but my son did.
Well Southern Illinois turkey season is over, back to a spectator. :bike2:
