Title: Beech wood
Post by: canadatom on May 31, 2014, 09:54:46 AM
Hello All,

I was just wondering about beech for box calls, I came across some nice beech wood and my first thought was box call as I have never tried it before, have mostly used walnut and butternut and cherry in past. Is it worth the time or no? Thanks for opinions.

Beech makes an ok sounding call, a few others have used it.

I had a young man in PA. contact me years back about some German Beechwood he had and wanted a box made. I told him I would try it. I made one for him, he killed a tom with it that week. He sent me a box of the stuff, 2X2X24 and I have around ten pieces left on the shelf. It was similar to sycamore, so you would have to apply your combos accordingly. But when you find the right paddle it sings turkey. He worked at Cabellas and sat it on a shelf behind the counter, several folks wanted to hear it and buy it after they did. Ended up making three from it. Each sounded good, but was tricky matching paddle to box, I ended up using paduak and redheart.
