Title: Need call recommendation for fall Tom turkey hunting
Post by: art338wm on May 27, 2014, 03:07:57 PM
I am going to give fall turkey hunting a try (actually I'm taking my son) and know next to nothing about it, except it has little in common with spring hunting tactics save for sneak and peek then put on a stalk and either call in a Tom or use no calling and just plane ambush him . As a result I am using the net to research how to fall hunt. One fact that has come up is it seems I will have to use and try to imitate Tom turkey talk to call in one into gun range. I'm not totally without ability as I have been turkey hunting for over 25 years and do alright.

My info so far is telling me that Tom clucks and yelps sound much raspier and deeper in tone than that of hen turkeys. So my question to all here what is the best type of call for me to buy/use to imitate the deep toned raspy calls a Tom makes? I also have been reading allot about using fighting purrs made by Toms to get one in gun range as well.

So for those who fall turkey hunt what are your favorite calls for duplicating Tom clucks, yelps and purrs?

A raspy box, like bloodwood over walnut, and slow down the cadence. Fall toms are tough!

In the Fall you call to the birds you want to shoot. True you call to turkeys  :D, but you call to certain birds, like if your looking to shoot a Poult or Hen, you use Poult and Hen talk, if your looking to shoot a Jake or Gobbler, you use Jake and Gobbler talk, and yes there is a difference. Don't sit out there expecting to call a gobbler in using hen talk, you have to know how and what calls to use for each turkey. Patience is a must in Fall hunting, it is nothing like spring. Birds won't travel very far to come to a call in the Fall, so getting close is very important, don't worry about busting them, your better off if you do, and better yet if you can bust them off the roost.

As far as what calls to use, you'll want calls that produces a very raspy yelp, a high pitched whinny yelp, and a very high pitched whistle sound, like a Long Box, and a Ceramic Pot Call, and a Yelper or Trumpet all work well in the fall.
