A friend of mine shot this today. It was a Jake. They are thinking a heritage turkey. I don't know anything about them. What do you guys think? (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/27/9a8aze5e.jpg)

Looks like one that's lived in a pen. But I'm not much on turkey biology either.
I've seen a wild red phased hen that was half white. She was on my hunting lease for a couple of years. She was similarly colored, but white in front and red in back.
It happens I guess.
I believe that is a Bourbon Red,...which is in the "heritage" classification of domestic turkeys. What the heritage classification means is that these turkeys are more capable of living under "natural" conditions than some other breeds which are not. It appears that your friend shot somebody's Thanksgiving turkey that had wandered too far from the pen!
Yea.. he's a bourbon red for sure.. more than likely sum1's pet!! That sucks.. I have 4 pet turkeys.. and I would be heartbroken if anything ever happened to one of em! :( my gobbler is a blue slate with just a touch of bourbon red in him!

Beat me to it.
The head and legs sure make it look like a farm bird

Cool picture. It is pretty amazing the bonds that we can make with other animals on this planet! (Don't let her out during turkey season!) ;)
Remind him the season is for "WILD" turkeys. :fud: :OGani:
Yep, Bourbon Red...You can see the breed on the hatchery websites like McMurray, etc. Don't let your buddy read the descriptions of their temperament... :^(
Some poor kids 4 h project ..LOL
Nice bird great job .

Not necessarily a tame bird. I saw one like that years ago in a flock of mountain birds
tame/wild lol
Looks just like the pet turkey in someone's pen on the route my wife takes to work daily.......
It's a free bird. Take the tag off it cause it does not need it. It may be feral but it is a domestic Burbon Red turkey and the condition of the feathers are from time spent in a pen. It is not a WILD turkey and thus is not under the management of your DCNR. Take that tag and go back hunting. :icon_thumright:
I am not judging anyone, but I don't think I would shoot anything like that. As soon as I laid eyes on it I would have believed it to be domestic.
Ironically he was hunting a farm and not the mountains so that makes more sense. It does seem that there are more color variants with turkeys than there are with deer for example. He said it came in gobbling so I don't know.
What I do know is that this fall he may have a photo shopped picture on his facebook wall with him sitting next to a dead cow holding his bow!! :goofball: :z-guntootsmiley: :goofball:
This is a funny post! The neighbors are probably wondering where their bird is at. I wouldn't have known the species either though.

There are rust or red phase wild turkey's out there so not that unreasonable to be fooled if you don't know what your looking at. There was a picture of a guy on the internet last year who shot a Royal Palm.
I reckon we can tell Memaw to quit hollerin for Fred....he aint coming back...ever... :funnyturkey:

Yep, people who raise turkeys should know when it is best to keep fred penned up fer a while!
I'd say it's either a honeysuckle or a butterball! LOL!
I have seen one wild hen that looked similar to that. I do believe that is a red Bourbin pen raised turkey. It's hard to tell but usually you can tell by the feet and legs. The tail does look warn from a pen.
