Bought a Funky Chicken 'cause I had Cabelas points and my interest was peaked by the whole concept. I've had chickens and domestic turkeys off and on for years and, as anyone who has had them knows, they'll kill any member who is weak. My thought process was, like the inventors, to take advantage of that natural trait. I used it a couple of times but hadn't had birds come to it so I more or less retired it. Well, today I thought I'd give it another shot. To make a long and interesting story short, I called a longbeard in and he proceeded to open a can of whoop a$$ on that little jacked up jake! He knocked the poor little fella down, beat him with his wings and pecked the life out of him! He worked that sorry little fella over for about 4 mins. straight! If you've ever been worked over, four minutes is a LONG time! He finally gave up both the beating and the ghost...I'm lovin' that little jacked up jake right now!
I had a gift card to Bass Pro burning up my pocket and ALMOST bought one today; but, I just could not get myself to do it. Haha. I keep thinking it would be easy to carry and stick in my vest rather than carrying another decoy sack with my strutter and hen. I just can't get over how stupid it looks and buy it. Good to hear that it works.
Got another headlamp instead.
Maybe he whooped him b/c of how goofy they look. In all seriousness, I know a couple guys who said that they love theirs...
He does look stupid...I have to laugh every time I look at him. Friends come in and I'll have him out and they always have a comment. Everybody chuckles when they see him. I guess he's worth it just for the entertainment! In all seriousness though, he really did work in a big way. That gobbler was so mad he just couldn't stop! I carry him in my decoy bag with my DSD hen...Only thing is, I don't know what I'll say if I'm set up and some hunter comes along...I can just see him pointing and howling and me embarrassed, hiding behind a tree...HAAAAH!
lol if it works it works
Caint beat no funky chicken! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCFyKRtlLOI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCFyKRtlLOI) (funky chicken at 5:33)
Uhm...Ahhh...Alrighty then...Well, maybe the same principle going on there. I couldn't stop watching so I guess...DID HE HAVE PINK SHORTS AND WHITE GO_GO BOOTS ON???!!!
Everyone hates on the funky chicken on here. I've read about guys with a fan and red tennis ball luring toms in... Why not the funky chicken? I'm not buying one but I couldn't imagine why it wouldn't work. One step better would be to just put a taxidermy head on a stake with a fan behind it. Bet it would work...
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No question they'd come to a fan and head. I used to use just a fan on a stick and I've had a number of gobblers come to it. They'd lose interest fairly quickly but they'd be there long enough for a shot. I think there are things that trigger an aggressive response from gobblers irrespective of associated stimuli. Fans do it as do red heads. No reason why a sickly looking bird with a red head wouldn't. I'm convinced by the display I witnessed that the funky chicken elicits that response...I guess everybody has an opinion and if you think it's a gimmick, well, o.k. Some really smart people thought the computer wouldn't fly (I'm talking REALLY smart people). I'll continue to use it as long as I get results like I did the other day...
I would never be able to get myself to stand in a check out line at cabelas with one of these, lol.
that said I killed my best bird to date using a fan on a stick and he pitched right too it so they aren't always as smart a bird as we make them out to be
Never heard of this before...
Anyone have a link, as a search on Cabelas proved ineffective? Curiosity has the best of me now.
If I recall, my buddy looked online at Cabelas and they didn't show it. I went to the catalog or a email notification and it was there. I'd suggest calling and speaking to customer service. They do have them. Or at least they did...
Long beard got funked this morning!
The "chicken" did his dirty work again this a.m.! Taking a few winks after some aggressive calling at flydown...After about 40 mins. of no calling, I opened up with some cackling and yelping...A few minutes of silence then another cackle and yelp sequence...GOBBLE! Just laid still and soon enough a long beard in full strut! He stood for a moment, then still in full strut, he started a fast walk to the decoys. When he arrived he turned to the hen for maybe 4 seconds. Just enough time for me to sit up and aim. He turned back and stared at the "decoy that's to stupid looking to work." He stood eye to eye with the chicken until I figured it best not to risk an eagle swooping down or a farmer showing up or some other such nonsense...I sent him to turkey Valhalla!
I gotta' say...I'm convinced! "Tiny Tim" will be in my vest from here on out...We're best buds now! :love5:
im gonna get one of these for next year i hardly ever use dekes but i might use this guy because of how weird he looks plus i could use it as a lawn orniment
O.k....So here's a way to get your funky chicken and a NWTF membership. You get an NWTF membership for $35 (link below). They'll give you a $25 gift card to Bass Pro. Put that $25 gift card and $5 together and you have a "chicken" and an NWTF membership...Go get 'em boys!!!

you just never know what might work for you
The chickens not so bad but I wouldn't buy one because waddells on the box.
I'd buy one if Barack Obamas' face was on one side and Harry Reids' face was on another and Nancy Pelosis' face was on the third...As long as I didn't have to take them hunting with me!
Why would you let who endorses it limit your enjoyment...I thought everybody learned early on the "cut off your nose principle"...
Just an update on the "chicken."
Used him again this year and he worked great. Longbeards and jakes treated him rough. Not as rough as last year but they were aggressive toward the little feller.
This year, hens were the ones! A few opened a can on my DSD hen!
I sometimes carry the Funky Chicken in my decoy sac rather than Pretty Boy because it's a lighter weight decoy. Last year, I had a hen, jake, and mature gobbler come in to the Funky Chicken and the jake really beat up on him while the mature bird watched...until a load of #5 shot took the two year old.
:funnyturkey: The funky Chicken might work but his not for me. I couldn't imagine carrying that around in my turkey vest. :TooFunny:
He's a goofy little fella but if he works, Tiny Tim will be with me... :newmascot:
My BIL gave me one of these chickens but hadn't used it until this past Saturday morning. i rarely use decoys as i primarily hunt in the woods. Was in Kansas this past week and was hunting a corn field where the birds were frequently strutting. Got in before daylight and set up an old she mobile and the chicken. before sunrise, a hen flew down into the dekes and fed off. Right around 6:30 and nice bird took a dirt nap strutting into the setup, 22lbs, 11" beard, 1 1/4" spurs
This is my first post here but I'm in the game to fool turkeys. I bout one of these when they first came out and use a decoy very little but I love the funky chicken. Called up a bird for myself my sister and my girlfriend this year with it an all three birds tried to whoop up on him. No complaints here
I've got a Funky Chicken and it does work. After making a tom decoy out of a black five-gallon bucket by attaching a fan, wings, and a 2x4 painted head and taking a couple of gobblers, I've come to the conclusion that any decoy that's turkey-like will bring in a gobbler in some situations. To me, trying various approaches to fooling a gobbler is one of the things that makes turkey hunting exciting and challenging!

^ I would like to see that Tom deek of the 5 galon pale. That sounds like a great idea.

Lol this reminded me of a hunt from last year. My uncle and I do not get along. In fact we hate each other. My wife had already killed a 1.75" bird that mornin and we headed out to get me one. I heard my uncle approaching using his flex tone thing that he blows into to yelp. I gave my best attempt at a gobble on my mouth call and god he went crazy with the calling.. i just stood there and never made another sound. Wasn't 5 minutes and him being the impatient and "unsuccessful" hunter he is here he comes walking up with that funky chicken poking out the back his vest. it looked like a parrot sitting on his shoulder. He scanned the area with binos and then put thar goofy call to his lips and huffed on it so hard I thought his head was.explode.. i couldn't help but laugh and then give him another gobble when he looked my way. he just stood there, my wife picked up her bird and continued on with our hunt.
I can't see a funky chicken anywhere without reliving that morning.
^ that is funny :TooFunny:

I personally couldn't even acknowledge someone that would use something so stupid. Doesn't surprise me what works on "pet" turkeys. To each their own though.
I'm trying to hold my tongue here...You wouldn't acknowledge someone who uses what YOU think is something stupid? That, to me, is stupidity personified. Here in N.J., turkeys are as educated as anywhere ,save maybe Georgia. They've been chased, called at and seen every sort of decoy made...Funky Chicken works on them...Not forcing you to use one...Guess maybe I should take the tac that if you're closed minded enough to not even "acknowledge", I should just shut up and leave you to your prejudices...

He's a curmudgeon. I bet the first thing he says when he looks in the mirror in the morning is "i hate your guts"
That decoy is pretty goofy lookin though. Lol
Well, maybe it more personifies your closed mindedness. I do things differently from a lot of other people but I don't refuse to "acknowledge" them. I'm not "above" them, which it sounds like you think you are.
I use decoys more to position birds and to distract them from my position. Do I HAVE to use them? No...Do I ENJOY using them? ENJOY seeing the turkeys reaction to them? Yes...Do they work? Yep...
So you and the guys "you run with" may be "all that" and feel it's below you to use certain techniques...Me, I'm out for the enjoyment. I happen to like the Funky Chicken, goofy looking as he may be...So I'll unapologetically use him. AND, I won't look down on anybody that uses other techniques. I certainly don't like the tolling stuff, or using a blind, but aside from the safety aspects of tolling, knock yourself out if that's what you like. I'm not going to disparage you or look down on you if you care to use that technique...You like "old school" good for ya'...You like to 'em hunt with snorkling gear. I'm all for ya'...Just save the holier than thou stuff for the sinners and bankers, will ya'?

Being of the "old school" and a traditional turkey hunter, I personally don't "acknowledge" any hunters who require decoys, no matter what kind, to kill gobblers. This is only my personal choice, along with the circle of like minded turkey hunters I run with. If this personified my stupidity, I can live with that.
I don't hunt dekes neither, or a blind. I've been hunting turks since 92 and I've seen a lot change in my 23 years of hunting these great birds. My grandad started hunting them at lbl is the 70's when kentucky had its first season. My grandparents raised me, me y grandmother was also a school teacher, so I got to miss as much school as i wanted to hunt.
there's one tactic I don't agree with even if it is legal in places and that's hunting over bait. As far as any other legal tactic, I'm not gonna knock anybody for hunting how they want to (as long as it don't interfere with me)
Alot of folks haven't had the times, opportunities, or mentors some of us were fortunate enough to have.
well I'm not too crazy about ground blinds neither because it does take away his number one sense, but anybody that would lug one of them big bastards in and out everyday has to be at least some kind of dedicated.
We are all supposed to be on yhe same team here.

I'm with ya' on the baiting...I'm of the opinion that that should be illegal everywhere. Like I say, some of the techniques aren't my thing but more power to ya' if it's yours. Just kind of pushed my "elitist" button when he said "acknowledge." Like he is above someone who chooses to use a decoy.
I'm probably fanatical in most peoples' opinion about archery. I can tune a bow probably as well as any professional. I have a press and a draw board and scales and any manner of stuff to make a bow perform to it's highest level. I make my own arrows and have educated opinions on arrow weight/speed/efficiency...I've studied a LOT about all of this stuff...I know guys that buy a bow, buy some arrows and shoot.
I'm sure most people look at me and think..."Why...Why expend that much energy? I hit stuff I shoot at..." They probably think I'm some sort of "whacko" and they probably get so tired of hearing about some technicality...
Do I look down on them because they don't seek knowledge? Nope, I'm glad if I can impart some but, if not, they're enjoying archery probably as much as I am...I'm all for them...
So when he said he doesn't "acknowledge" it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way...I'm all for "old school." There's a reason why certain techniques developed and more power to ya' if you use them and enjoy...It was just the condescending nature of his comment that made me take exception...
As far as I'm concerned, yes, we are on the same team...I just don't like automatically being put on the bench...

I completely understand you getting pissed. It rubbed me the wrong way too. If you like your funny lookin decoy and he works for ya, then who the hell is he "or me" to judge.
I don't get that attitude either. I've had elitist guys give me grief here on OG, and they don't even know me. I hunt with deke spreads, single deke, no dekes, I use a blind on rare occasion, I call aggressively sometimes, conservatively at other times, I've stalked up on turkeys and I've sat against trees and killed turkeys. Everything I've done is legal, and in my opinion ethical.
There are some methods of turkey hunting I haven't yet done. But the bottom line for me is, if it's legal, and it makes you happy to do it, then go for it!!! I will never understand the theory of "I don't want to do, therefore I don't approve of you doing it." Huh? ??? Makes absolutely no sense. ::)
We ALL need to support fellow hunters that use legal methods of hunting. :icon_thumright:
