Title: Setting a blind in an open field.
Post by: chadly on April 29, 2014, 09:17:50 AM
Anyone ever try it?  I've got some birds I've been watching and it's going to be very tough to set up on the timber edge as there will be no visibility.  If I were to set up in the field I can see great and face where they come from.  Just curios if it will spook the birds or any ill consequences.

I don't hunt out of a blind, but everything I've seen and heard...no. Turkeys are not like deer, I've seen guys set a blind in a wide open field in the morning darkness that turkeys frequent daily and kill one a 15 yards the same morning. I past by my front window a few years ago and noticed something. Right off my front porch with one foot on my sidewalk was a mature gobbler in full strut. He could of cared less about being so close to my house and being totally out of place.

I've hunted from blinds before and had birds walk within feet of them.  You can set them up the day you hunt and they pay no attention to them.  Give it a try.

Yep. I've had birds walk 3 feet from me in a blind I set up that morning.

Turkeys don't seem to care about blinds sitting out in the open.

Set it up in the middle of the field and hunt it.....they will pay no attention to it.

Thanks.  I've been hunting out of a blind for three or four years now and really like it.  It comfortable sitting in a chair and I can bring kids or friends and we can get away with movement.  I've always tucked the blind in up against a wood line or timber of some sort.  the birds do seem to spook by it.  However, I have not set up in a field.  Will give it a try and see what happens.  Thanks again.
