If you'd had to pick one or the other to tote, would it be a trumpet or a wingbone, and why?
I've focused a lot on learning the trumpet call the past couple years, and recently been messing with a couple of wingbones. I'm carrying both this spring, even alternating between a two piece and three piece wingbone. But if I had to pick between a trumpet and a wingbone, based on what I'm hearing now that I've spent time with both, it might be the wingbone, simply for its uniqueness when it comes to the sound.
What are your thoughts?

For a caller with not a lot of ability I'd say the wingbone is probably better....for the more skilled caller the trumpet will walk all over a wingbone.

I would agree with Frank on this one, so much better range of calling with a trumpet verses a wingbone. As long as you are proficient in using one.

The trumpet I'm running is a Hegler, so I don't disagree with opinions put forth. I'm no callmaker, but seems logical a callmaker can probably more easily tune and time a call that's precisely turned on a lathe, versus assembling unique and individual set of bones made by mother nature.
Yet, some hunters gravitate to a wingbone, and often there may be two wingbones in their lineup with one made from hen and the other jake or maybe gobbler bones in order to challenge a gobbler's pecking order. Or the jake/gobbler bone is the go-to call later in spring or fall season.
Though I've owned and messed with a couple, I'd characterize myself as essentially new to wingbones, and finding I like the sound they are producing.

I have both as well and overall, the trumpet wins IMO. However, i like a good wingbone and have harvested some with one I made and I am no callmaker. It is a great feeling taking a turkey with a caller you made.
I too Have both, use both, have killed with both and like them both. I would have to gravitate toward a Trumpet for a better range of sound. I Do have to agree with Silverspur and encourage any successful hunter to save those wing bones and make themselves a call or two. There is no better sense of accomplishment than killing a turkey with a call that you made yourself
I like both, have used both to call in birds.
Both have their place in the call world but I will have to give it up to the Trumpet if for no other reason is that you are less likely to break a Trumpet. Not saying that a well seasoned caller can't run the pee out of a Wingbone. In the right hands they are deadly. It's much easier to build a consistence sounding trumpet.
I Love my trumpet from Brian Mero. Killed my first Gobbler with it also this year. I will never be in the woods without one around my neck, its all turkey. Never used a wing bone yet but i will at some point in the future.
