Yesterday morning I decided to try to locate some birds in the area of a field where I had seen some gobblers strutting back in March. I listened at daylight on the west side of the field and just heard a couple gobbles to my south about flydown time, but couldn't get a good read on the location or distance. So I set up a little ways down the field in that direction and called occasionally with no response until about 830. I picked up my stuff and paralleled the field edge just inside the woods in the general direction I had heard the gobbling for about 200 yds to a little rise in the field. I decide to call with a mouth call before I peeked down the field edge and a bird gobbled down in the woods to my west. I went about 60-70 yds farther into the woods and set down. After I got a couple more answers I realized there were 2 birds gobbling together and they were working on south. I then had a hen come in to about 10 yds and work on up to towards the field. After she had went by I called again and they answered closer coming back towards me. I was hoping they would follow the same path as the hen, but after several minutes and not seeing the gobblers I called and they had turned and were out to the field edge about 100yds to the south. I tried to turn around on the tree I was sitting and got part of the way around when I heard turkey putt out at the field edge behind me. I froze and did not move for about 5 min. I was afraid the gobblers had busted me, but when I did get turned around I heard them gobble at a crow out in the field. I was able to get them to answer my calls but they were slowly working away on down the field. I decided I needed to do something else and slowly crawled back to within 30 yds of the field edge. I switched to another mouth call and mixed in some scratching in the leaves and finally got them slowly coming my way. Finally, I saw them coming up the edge toward me. They would take step, stop and look, take a step, stop and look, etc. I had two shooting lanes I could see out to the field and luckily the front gobbler happened to stop in one, and I was able to make about a 40 yd shot at 950 and fill my 2nd NC tag. He was probably a 3yr old at 20 lbs, with a 10 3/4" beard and 1 1/16" spurs.
