Title: Behavior question
Post by: gspn on April 14, 2014, 11:32:27 AM
Sometimes when you shoot a turkey, the other turkey's in the area all jump on him and start whooping his butt while he's dying.  Why do they do that?

It's all about the pecking order, kick him while he is down.  They don't process the boom as their buddy got shot.  Birds can be pretty ruthless.  I used to raise chickens and domestic turkeys and if one gets injured the others will beat the tar out of it.  Also, once they see/get a taste of blood, they can turn cannibalistic.

ESPECIALLY if you shot the dominant bird that has been kicking their butt and lording over them.  Animals aren't supposed to be able to process the thought of revenge, but it sure looks like they do some times.
