Title: SBE II scope mounting
Post by: brimmyfish on April 12, 2014, 01:23:40 AM
Hey guys I have been trying to decide whether I want to put an optic on my SBE II. I know it's drilled and tapped but I don't know that I want to take those plugs out of my receiver. I use this gun for about everything from wing shooting to skeet and turkey hunting so I would only need the scope for about a month out of the year. I have heard that these plugs aren't really reusable.  My question is has anyone had any experience with removing these plugs and what do you do when it's not turkey season? I just don't want holes in my receiver if I go duck hunting or something where the gun is out in some less than favorable environments. Lol

Thanks in advance for the help!!!!

Sounds like you are looking for a saddle mount --

Thank you for your response. Do you have any suggestions on which saddle mount I should pick up? Will a saddle mount scratch up my receiver?

Thanks again!!

I have an Aimpoint 9000SC red dot on my SBE 2 and love it!

I never took it off so I'm unsure about the small plastic plugs. Maybe you can contact Benelli to see if you can get replacements perhaps? I'm not a big fan of saddle mounts.

Buy a set of filler plugs/screws from brownells.

I have reused the plugs in my Stoeger M3500 for the last 3 seasons. I know that this isn't the same gun that you have, but I would think that the plugs are the same material. I remove the trigger group and carefully poke them out from the inside with a pick. They are starting to look a little rough now and will be replaced when the red dot comes back off after this weekend.

I have removed and re-installed the plugs several times in my benelli and they stayed in ok. They are getting pretty ragged and loose though so i'm just going to order a few extras to keep on hand. The suggestions for getting filler screws from brownells is a great idea, they would be a lot easier to install/remove and aren't going to fall out. Just make sure they don't protrude down through the receiver or they will hit the bolt.

I'd recommend that you install the base for whatever optical sight you want and then when you no longer need or want the sight on your gun, just remove it and leave the base in place. It will  not interfere with your using it as a wing gun. In that way, you are not installing or removing screws that hold your base in place and you won't run the risk of eventually stripping the threads.

Thanks,
