Title: h&r 12 gauge turkey edition and longbeards
Post by: philipriley16 on April 06, 2014, 07:19:28 PM
Gun has the 24 inch barrel and 3.5 chamber. Has factory full barrel no choke and I was shooting longbeard 3in 6's and shot 20,30,40,50. Question is the gun shot terrible at all ranges barrel was a little dirty and after 6 shots it was filthy with stuff all down it, has anyone else shot this combo and if so what where your results going to try thugs tomm.

i shot into a huge piece of card board and shot was all over place at 30. 20 yard pattern looked like what id expect at 40 with these shells. 30 was barely getting 100 in any given 12 inch circle. now i did shoot one 3.5 thug that i had left from last year and it would kill cleanly at 40 no problem ony thing is i cant handdle that recoil to test again it was unbreable and i dont think you need all that just to kill. i may just have to stowe this beast away till i can get it threaded for chokes. as to the extra dirty barrel aftere shooting the longbeards is anyone else having this problem

Try the #4's. It will shoot those best out of a fixed full barrel.

I have the same gun and have posted that it will not eject the three inch or 3 1/2 inch longbeards. Have you had this problem? It shoots them great just will not eject them but ejects everything else fine. Also, it has the shooters friend recoil pad on it that Clark Bush sometimes has. Makes shooting it very manageable but it still needs some help with the cheek slap.

Ejects the 3" fine as that's all I shot in it (longbeards) did you happen to deep clean your barrel

No I haven't. Just got the gun the day before season opened thru gunbroker. It is unbelievable how well it shoots the longbeards. I posted the numbers in a post from me in this section about the problem with the gun. It won't eject Longbeard 3 or 3 1/2 but all others it does fine. The numbers it does with Longbeard 4s is shocking. I think it was 141 in 10 at 40 but my notes aren't with me right now.

My son shot the 3 inch 6s in his 870 with 21 inch barrel. It only shoots 3 inchers. It had so many holes and was so dense we didnt even count the holes. It was really good. The first shot with the H and R was 4s that we shot and they were so good we had to shoot another 4 in it just to make sure. I have pictures on my phone but don't even know how to post them on here. Personally, I have always shot 5s or 6s but as good as the fours were and with the extra energy I will shoot 4s in this gun anytime.

I have that exact same gun and got it threaded and put in a rem xtra full choke. At 40 yds with 3.5" #6 longbeards the pattern was so dense at forty I didn't bother counting. The pattern at twenty was about the size of a cantaloupe. That gun does knock the snot out of you though.

I have patterned the NWTF edition that should be the same gun. It produced awesome patterns out too 50 yards with the magnum blend hevi-shot turkey loads.

I have the same gun, I have shot and patterned dozens of different turkey loads in it and the only ones I found to  group and kill are the Federal heavy weight flight control 7 shot, 3 and 3.5 loads all work great, this gun is finicky, we loade some TSS loads and it like them ok, the 2 0z. 9x7 did the best so far, with 224 in the 10 in. at 40 yards, the federal HW are the best factory load you can get for your gun, order some now and save time and money on the others that will not pattern. good luck.
