Title: Turkey hunting magazine
Post by: PaLmbHngr on April 03, 2014, 08:25:22 PM
I was talking with a Friend this week about how there is no turkey hunting only magazine out there (aside from the nwtf) since turkey & turkey hunting is no more. He owns and publishes a couple outdoor magazines and we talked about the possibility of publishing a turkey hunting only magazine. I was wondering what your thoughts would be about a new magazine for us turkey hunters. Any interest? Thanks.

Good question! My initial thoughts are with internet based websites like this one where there is a constant stream of up to date and useful information coming in I'm not so sure. Personally, I find myself headed to the internet rather than flipping through a magazine. It will be interesting to see what people think on this one....Strutter

Turkey Country does leave a lot to be desired.  I miss T&TH and would love to see another dedicated turkey hunting magazine published.

I'm on here and other sites a lot, but I still love reading a traditional magazine.  Especially one kept on the back of the porcelain throne!

So, I'm an IT guy now(I used to work in a published industry), so I'm going to say that the internet killed the newspaper, magazine, and the business card, but I would buy a turkey hunting magazine. There definitely is a void in that market place but forums like this one have taken the place of published works. Mostly due to the fact that it's free and honestly the advice is better because you receive it from people that are actually killing birds instead of selling calls, decoys, pine scented cover scent that's "designed" for a bird that can't actually smell. If started the market would be small, but like I said I would buy it....always need something for when the battery dies while riding the porcelain pony :turkey2:

If subscribe. The question I have when thinking about a venture like that is... Why did T&TH fail?

I think it could be a success. If it had enough good info for beginners and enough advanced info for those with years of experience. Maybe a dedicated turkey gun section, a call making section and a new gear section, just for starters. I have thought of this myself. A turkey hunters magazine that actually has fresh info in it. It would be a good thing. If you decide to do it, contact me. My brain is about to explode thinking of ideas.

You got a supporter here. I subscribed to T&TH for years and I miss it. I'm an NWTF member and get their mag and it's good but it has a lot of things I don't care for. I love to have another magazine that aims directly at turkey hunting only.

Humm...porcelain throne, I'm starting to see things a bit clearer. Case in point, you enter the bathroom and adorn the throne and grab your beloved magazine. You finish your business and then reach for the TP and it is nowhere to be found. Now, you look down at your magazine and suddenly began to see it in a different light. Well...you know the next move and I certainly would'nt want to try it with my IPhone...lol So, in hindsight( no pun intended) I can definitely see an advantage!

The issue is not whether people would read it but circulation.  It cost a lot of coin to publish a magazine.  It's real easy to end up with several thousand copies that don't sell and then your profit is down the drain.

What was the down-fall of T&TH mag? Lack of subscribers or sales in general.

I remember buying it off the stand many times and then it was gone.

This.

Folks can be cheap.

Magazines cost money.

With all the complaints I hear about paying $10 a year to support the NWTF, I'm not surprised any turkey rag could survive for long.

Turkey annuals generally suck, planned to last a year, the info can't be very current, and it's usually just a catalog for the advertisers.

I'm glad we had T&TH while it lasted, but the subscribers, or lack thereof, killed it.....

Just my take, yrmv...

With a company that sells printed words....the company is only as good as it's salesmen. I would bet everything I own on the fact that t and th had too small of an audience so they shut down.  They took their market to the box stores like Walmart, and when you do that it has to sell many copies because you printed several. A small company with the loyal followers that are on here will make some money allot of people happy, and I would love to be a part of it. However, I don't see this idea really getting big because of the market size. The target would be too small...still something worth chasing and something I would subscribe to.

Does anyone get Fur Fish and Game? The mag costs more but I still take it. There also aren't as many big name advertisements. I imagine the dynamic of running FFG Different than other outdoor mags. Maybe a different business plan would be more profitable. I'd  pay 20 a year for T&TH. I don't know how these companies do it for 8, 10, or 12 a year.

I would probably subscribe. I'm a sucker for just about anything turkey. My suggestion would be to have a section about guns and gear that isn't all 'factory stock stuff'. Most of us have a smorgasbord of gear with mismatched parts. That would make it seem more real to me.

I wasn't aware that T&TH was out of publication. Last month they.published their spring gear guide and the jacket had the standard T&TH logos. If this is true, it's a tragedy. But it is true that the internet has replaced magazines. I am active in several forums and even on Facebook there are turkey hunting groups to join. Neck, through a few mutual friends, I became"friends" with several top turkey hunters on their own personal pages (not just the fan page). Ernoe Callandrelli, Ray Eye, Philip Vanderpool, Matt Morrett, Paul Butski, Mark Jenkins, Scott Ellis, Shane Simpson, and many more. My Facebook wall looks like a turkey hunting boot camp! I will greatly miss that awesome magazine, but I def won't be lonely for turkey hunting material!

Frankly, I don't want more "paper" stacked up in my house, so ...  I'm not a fan of traditional magazines, and probably wouldn't subscribe...

*BUT* if it was like Acoustic Guitar Magazine, where they essentially post the same content online, then ya, I'd "subscribe" to that...  I like the idea of something that has a LOT of product demos - like AGM has...  Helps to make you a better informed "buyer" vs. buying something "blind", like I normally do w/turkey calls...
