Title: 835 vs BPS
Post by: bax20ter on April 02, 2014, 07:01:46 PM
I've been in the market for a new turkey gun for a while. I have a couple of options already on guns but I have the opprotunity to pick up a never fired mossberg 835 for 200 bucks and a used but in good shape browning bps special steel for 300$. Both 28" barrels. Mossy comes with 3 factory chokes, bps comes with lead improved and lead full invector chokes. Any opinions on one vs the other? Thinking about dipping whichever one I end up with to have a camo turkey slayer. Not the most important thing but A friends dad would do whole gun for 75$. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! I'm going to use your input for my decision.

I believe you said the BPS has Invector, Not Invector Plus Chokes.  Both of those are good fair prices.

I've owned an 835 before, and I now own an Invector Plus BPS.  I like the BPS better as an overall shotgun.  If you're looking for a Turkey-only gun, the 835 is a worthy consideration.

bps is definitely better quality, but for a turkey gun It really doesn't matter much, you can use the 100 you saved on the mossy and get a new choke and ammo for it.

I'd take the usa mad mossberg over the japan made browning any day.

I had a 835....they seem cheaply made.....switch to the bps and love it.

I am a little bias because I shoot left handed and wanted the bottom eject of the empty hull when hunting ducks.

I'm biased because I own a couple bps's and love them. That being said they will both work for what you want, I would try to shoot both if possible and pick the one that feels the best to you. The Mossberg will have a lot of accessories available plus the patterning advantage with the over-bored barrel. The bps is built like a tank and you will not break it or wear it out. I have had one of my bps's for almost 20 years and it's had literally thousands of rounds through it, mostly 3" mags and it still works like new and has never malfunctioned except one time with a reload my uncle gave me that stuck in the chamber. And since your buying used no money is going overseas. Btw, the bps is built in the Miroku factory that builds high quality target guns, so they are extremely well built and finished for a mass produced pump. Wouldn't trade mine for any xyz brand pump.

Money was no object when I bought my turkey gun and ended up with an 835 Grand Slam simply because it was the lightest to carry. You carry way more than you shoot. Plus it will pattern any shell I put in it. I did put on a Sims pad and that really helped tame the recoil.

I've had both. Both patterned the same. I sold the 835 and kept the BPS. Mine is the invector plus with the back bored barrel.

835 does nothing for me...

I would choose the BPS, no contest...

I owned an 835 and got tired of picking up the extra shells it ejected when I pumped.  Seemed to always throw an extra on the ground or not fire the one in the chamber.  Bought the BPS and it has been flawless.  Killed my first turkey with the 835 though.

Ive patterned both guns and they shot very well with there factory chokes and hevi shot loads for out of the box performance. The 835 is substantially lighter than the browning and comes more decked out with turkey hunting accessions the models that i had experiences with. The experiences that i have had with the two was more malfunctions with the 835. Have had four friends in total end up selling or having parts replaced. With that being said lemons are prevalent in all brands of firearms. Not bashing the 835 just my personal experience with them. Have a buddy who has a old 500 in the old school camo thats been flawless smashing clays, ducks, turkeys and various other critters. As you see in the price difference between the two if you dislike the browning it will fetch a higher resale or trade in if you dislike.

I don't know anything about the BPS, but I can tell you that I love Mossberg turkey shotguns. My brother has a Mossberg 500, and I have the 835, and 935. I've seen no issues from any of these shotguns. I'd buy the Mossy for $200.00, and never look back.

Had one of the original 835's for 20 years.  Replaced it with a BPS for no real reason other than I always admired them and I got a good deal on the BPS at a gun show.  Both worked flawlessly for me. I can honestly say that I never had either one jam on me.  I had a friend jam his BPS once.  Like most pumps the BPS runs best if you don't baby it when you pump it. The 835 did have a rattle in the forend, but once I got used to it it wasn't an issue. I got rid of the 835 before I started counting pellets in a 10 inch circle, but I'd say they patterned about the same. The BPS is heavier, but I consider that a feature and not a bug. The extra weight reduces recoil and if an extra pound it too much to carry maybe you should take up macrame ;)

I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Which one feels like it comes up to your shoulder and fits you the best?

I'd say the bps is the nicest 3.5 inch pump being made but turkey hunting isn't much of a test of a shotgun so either one would work.

Try them both out if you have the chance. Comes down to what feels best to you. You might like the trigger better on the BPS, and then again you may prefer the 835. Handle both as much as possible, I don't think either one is a bad decision.

If it's for turkey hunting only, I might lean towards the 835.  If I'm going to use it for other stuff also, I'd probably go with the BPS.

I own both. Love both. No Issues with either. If you water fowl hunt as well the BPS would be the way to go in a duck blind. reflexl
