Title: 835 Turkey Thugs Sight Woes
Post by: Bent Barrel on March 31, 2014, 11:32:15 AM
Goodmorning Gents, this is my first post...but I have been lurking for awhile.  I bought an 835 Turkey Thugs edition with a 20" barrel the other day simply because it was too good of a deal.  It patterns fairly well using the X-Factory turkey choke and 3" Longbeard XR 6's.  My problem is that using the fiber optic sights, I have run out of adjustment on the rear sight.  I have the rear sight all the way down against the rib, but am still hitting 12" high at 30 yards.  It came with a TruGLo red dot, but that cheap piece of junk broke while clamping it to the picatinny rail.  Has anyone else experienced this?  The only solutions I see are to raise the front sight or buy another red-dot...and I'm not sold on the red-dots.

Thanks for the help,
Bent Barrel

New gun? If so I'd take it back. Unacceptable for a gun not to shoot to poa with original sights and chokes. A shotgun is made to shoot flying, running game if you cannot look down the barrel and hit where you are looking the gun is useless imo.

Oh, and welcome to the board! I'm sure better help and advice will be forthcoming!

Unfortunately, no...its not a new gun.  I bought it in the gun library at Cabelas.  $400 seemed like a pretty good deal considering it has 0 wear marks.  The action and pump slides didn't even have any wear on them...still black.

My 835 had the exact same problem. I scoped mine though.

Shooting high is a trademark of Mossberg turkey guns. Just about all of the 835/935 models shoot high. You can invest in a good red dot or buy some fiber optic sights. I suggest Tru Glo Pro Series Magnum Gobble Sights or Williams "Slugger" Fire Sights.

Thanks for the help guys.  I just ordered the TruGlo Pro Series Gobble Stopper sight.  I really appreciate the suggestion.  I did call TruGlo just now, and they are going to warranty the scope.  I guess I will just use the open sights this year, then decide if I want to use the red-dot next year.

You will like the Tru Glo Magnum Gobble Stopper Pro Series  sights, I have a set on my 935 and a set on a BPS 10 ga.

Tru Glo has great customer service...my last set of Gobble Stopper Pro Series sights the little windage adjustment allen screw ( and I do mean little!) was not threaded correctly...I e-mailed  them on their website and had a free replacement part (windage piece and screw)  about three days later. They even threw in some free fiber optic tubes as spares.

I was not able to remove my old factory Mossberg turkey sights without leaving a small scratch on the side of the rib...before I installed then new sights I used some Krylon flat green and tan camo paint and daubed it the scratch on with a Q-tip...couldn't even tell it was ever scratched.

How are the factory sights held on?  They appear to be glued on, maybe?

First of all, welcome to OG. This truly a great place and I know you'll enjoy it here.

I'd recommend a set of the Truglo Pro-Series as well. They are great sights that are attached to your rib with set screws, have fiber optic inserts, all steel and are fully adjustable for windage and elevation. I have them on several guns.

Thanks,
Clark

The Pro Series will be here Wednesday.  Any idea how to get the factory fiber optics off?

Thanks.

They just snap on the rib. You can carefully pry them off.

Thanks,

I have the same shotgun as you, and do not have these problems with the fiber sights or the truglo that came with it.  Have you tried contacting Mossberg?  I've been really pleased with mine... for the price, it has exceeded my expectations.

I'm running the X-Factor choke with 3 1/2" Remington Nitro Turkey 4's
