And is it the same make and model as your primary? I currently am shooting a winchester 1300, i stopped by the pawnshop and they had a nice mossburg 835 and also had a winchester 1300. I was thinking of getting the winchester as a backup so everything would be interchangable. Chokes, barrel, parts. Looking for ideas. Thanks

I TAKE MY M2 20ga. AN TAKE MOSSBERG 930 FOR A BACK UP
IVE ALWAYS TAKE TWO WHEN I GO HUNTING , JUST. HABITE .. :icon_thumright:
For many years I have had two 835's, one set up with a pistol grip and the other a traditional stock. The pistol grip was my primary and the traditional was my backup. Just swap the choke from one to the other. The traditional stocked gun was also my everything else gun.
This year I purchased a pistol grip 935 and it is now my primary. I am putting the traditional stock back on the 835 but leaving the sights on it. So now I will have a primary, backup, and backup to the backup again just swapping the choke and go.
I've got a few back ups. Either Remington 870s or Mossberg 935 and a 835
I got two 870 my old 3" gun and my old 3.5" gun. Both have 26" pipes and the same bad camo tape job, and two of the same choke. Only difference is the 3" has a wood stock and two beads, and the other is plastic stock and Truglo sights. Both kill dead at 40+.
My back up is my old 20ga Mossberg 500. I got a 870 SM this year and is now my primary gun. I still have 2 other shotguns for a worst case scenario. You definitely need a back up gun. You do not want to get stuck without one during turkey season. IMO you would waste precious hunting time finding/buying a new one and setting it up.
Having a gun that you can change parts out on is not a bad idea if you can get a good deal on it. Good Luck!
Never had a true turkey gun backup before, but bought an M2 20ga last year so now my 12ga 870 is the backup. I actually have two backup 870's now because I picked up a short barrel and Knoxx stock, but decided to put them on my old slug gun. So now I have the M2, the 870 w/Knoxx & 21" barrel, and a plain old synthetic 870 w/26" barrel (my original turkey gun).
My first dedicated turkey gun was a 835...it's still in GREAT shape, but I purchased a Weatherby PA-459 last year and it has become my primary hunting shotgun.
My Berettas back up each other. When I hunt with the 12 the 20 is a backup and when I hunt with the 20 the 12 is the backup. Both are killers! :icon_thumright:
I keep switching back and forth between my Benelli SBE 2 and Mossberg 835. I don't like taking my Benelli out in the rain ;).
My primary gun is a beretta 390 and I have an 870 wingmaster as a back up
Primary gun, 870 super mag with shur shot stocks. Back up gun, 3"11-87 with shur shot stocks.
1) Super Nova
2) BPS NWTF
3) SBE II
4) Browning Silver
5) H&K SBE
I'd trust any of these in the field...
mudhen
I claim to have 2 backups but they were really just replaced by my 870 supermag.

My primary is a 870 Super Mag, 26" barrel, Bottomland camo, Burris FastFire.
My backup is a 3" 870 Express 12ga., 26" barrel, fiber optic front bead, wood stock and forearm. I have a Jellyhead .660 and Hevi-Shot .662 tubes, both shoot really good in either gun, would like to try an Indian Creek eventually.
My Remington model 870 special purpose mag is my main squeeze. My back up is a Remington SP-10.
This is my primary turkey rig , the back up is the 380 taped to the stock , if it gets all gangsta ' and I run out of ammo like Sigourney Weaver did in aliens and I have to shoot and stab my way back to the shuttle ( in my case the pick up truck ) I will use the bayonet attachment
- I usually chirp it into 2nd hear and throw out a peace sign when I light out of my turkey huntin spot with barely my life to spare

Just kidding .... My primary is a sp10 , if it ever breaks and it just won't quit on me , I have a versamax
My primary turkey gun is a Benelli SBE I. It's the gun I carry the most. I have four backups, a Rem. 870 SM, a Browning BPS 10 ga., a Benelli Nova 20 ga., and a Knight TK 2000 ML. :smiley-char092:
I don't really have a backup. I have several different guns and use each on occasion. I primarily tote either of the 870 20 gauge guns.
870 20 gauge 21" barrel with OD green cerakote and knoxx stock. FF3 sight
870 20 gauge 21" barrel MO original bottomland
Weatherby SA-08 20 gauge 24" barrel. FF3 sight
Mossberg 835 24" barrel MO Breakup with Nikon Turkey Pro Scope
Beretta Xtrema 1 26" barrel MO new bottomland
I usually hunt with my Mossy 935, and have the 835 as my back-up. This year I'm doing it the other way around.

got another 835 on deck
My primary is a SBE2, but I have an old 870 as a backup. The 870 will be passed down to my boy when he's old enough, but I still shake the dust of it every spring at some point. I also have a Franchi Affinity in 20g that I have been toying with.
I used a 870 Express, my kid took it away from me as soon as he was big enough to shoot it, so I bought a 2nd Express to use. The kid got a 11-87 a few yrs ago and quit using my gun. I just got a Stoeger M3500 to use for turkey and duck. Right now, primary is still my 870, but that may change when I actually get to hunt with the Stoeger.
Benelli supernova 26"/.655 jellyhead backed up by 870 express 21"/.660 gobblin' thunder.

I shoot the 935 I just bought and love the results from it. My backups are my 870sm and old browning a5 with a 30in full choke. I use to take the a5 a few hunts every year and have killed 2 with it. This year I fell in love with the longbeards and 935 and killed out and couldn't take her :(
1300 is a good gun, sounds like you have a good plan, I have a 1300 and 2 870's to go to if I need anything else.
Everyone needs at least one backup turkey gun. To the OP - if I had to choose between the 835 and another 1300 for a dedicated turkey gun I would go with the 835. I kow you already have a 1300 so swapping items would be a plus but there is no guarantee that the other 1300 would work well with the items you use now. Rare is the 835/935 that does not throw great patterns with minimal work. Plus variety is the spice of life.
I currently have the following and take whatever I feel like carrying that particular day:
Mossberg 500C, 20 ga., Pure Gold .555, ATI talon stock, burris speed bead
Stoeger M2000, 12 ga., .643 SSX choke
Remington 870, 12 ga., .665 jellyhead
Mossberg 835, 12 ga., .676 Star Dot
Thanks for all the replies.

I always thought that if you owned two shotguns, you automatically had a backup?
1. Browning Silver
2. Remington 870 SPS Super Mag
Both are equally lethal.
