Title: Quitting snuff
Post by: Spring_Woods on March 26, 2014, 11:02:18 AM
Well yesterday at noon I finally said enough is enough. I told my wife I would quit before our son gets here.
15 years ago I picked it up and wished I never did. Along the way, I've quit a few times but this is the last time.

I'm not sure what made yesterday the day to do it but I did. Feeling pretty rough still, need to get through the first few days.

Good for you. Dipped for 20 years and been off it for 2 years now. Ain't going back!

It will be hard at times and the relationship will always be there but trust in god and stick with it!

Good Luck and keep it up! My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer about 6 years ago. This made him want to quit chewing and he quit cold turkey. I chewed too. I figured it wouldn't be good to be chewing around him, so I quit. Neither he or I have chewed in 6 years. It gets easier as time goes buy and you will be happy that you quit.

I quit Copenhagen February 15th my 40th birthday. Been either smoking or dipping since I was a teen.  There was something about turning 40 that made living a few more years that much more of a reason and I remind myself that the savings on quitting nicotine allows for more money to put towards positive things like turkey calls and hunting.

That's good news.  When I quit cigarettes years ago, I put aside the cash I would have spent on a pack of smokes every day.  And here is the sad part:

It only took me 90 days to save enough for a new Winchester 1300 decked out in Mossy Oak.  (90 days x $5 a day) = $450.00.  When the gun came in and I picked up I wondered what the heck I was doing giving away my money all those years, for nothing.

Every three months I was putting enough cash to buy a new shotgun into the hands of big, rich tobacco companies, and hurting myself.  Why should I give big tobacco $2,000 a year of my hard earned money so they in turn can give me cancer or heart disease??  Rather put that money in the kids pockets or set it aside for a family emergency.

Stay present in the moment, don't think you're somehow deprived, instead believe you are fortunate to have health.  Set goals - Reward yourself for your milestones - celebrate 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, five years, ten years.  Soon you look at snuff or smokes and wonder why you even wanted it.   :icon_thumright:

I quit a 25 year habit about 12 years ago.  It's still tough some days but don't really miss it.
Stay strong and you will beat it.

I quit dipping 25 years ago when my son was born because I didn't want to be a bad example for him. It gets easier every day you don't do it. I wish I'd have thought to put away the money I saved and bought a new gun or two  ???.

Finding something useful to take up your attention like fly tying, reloading or making turkey calls sure helps.  Best of luck.  Let us know how you're getting along.

stay strong.  I have been doing this junk everyday for 25 years.  I quit once (for a month) a few years back.  I have been thinking about it a lot ... this year I will be done with it.

My tip -  if you drink... quit that too for the first few months. that is the fastest way to jump back into it.

I chewed Copenhagen snuff for 25 years. I quit cold turkey 17 years ago and never looked back. It can be done. It requires WILLPOWER AND INNER FORTITUDE! DO NOT GIVE UP OR GIVE IN TO THE URGES.THEY WILL PASS. Good luck to you. You will not regret it.

I quit a few years ago after dipping for close to 14 years. Marking the days on a calendar helped me stay motivated. Once a week turns into a month and so on you can see how far you've come. I still get the urge every now and then but it passes quickly.

Good luck man. It was one of the hardest things I ever did in my life. I quit a little over a month ago. I made it 3 weeks. I'm sorry to say I'm back chewing again. I hope you can do it. I've been chewing cope for 19 yrs, it's a tough nut to crack.

good luck to you.  Apparently this is the week to quit. I when from a can or more a day Grizzly wintergreen chewer to one or two of the little snus packets a day. Tried cold turkey before but the headaches and teeth grinding was driving me nuts.  Hoping the step down method will work for me.

Yeah it was an easy choice to make but not easy to execute. I got this cold sore on my gum just below my tooth. It's still there, likely just a canker sore but still scary. I noticed it last Friday and it looks a little better now, but I'll be watching it!

If you have a concern go to the dentist. One thing my family has learned in the past few years is waiting and watching is sometimes not the best thing. I just had an oral cancer exam last month just as I do when I'm in for my cleaning. It took about one minute and all they did was look with a special light. No big deal at all.

Thanks for the heads up! I was looking at it some again tonight and it has fluid in it, so I'm 99% sure it's a canker sore. I haven't had a dentist cleaning in about 4 years, I will look into it!

Dipped for seven years on the sly, or so I thought. Finally got "caught", and I quit the next day. Cold turkey.

The first two weeks were hell, but I stuck with it and never looked back. The psychological addiction was as bad, if not worse, than the physical.

Good luck and hang tough. Do it for your family and it will be well worth it.

Wow. 2.5 cans is a lot!!! My peak has always been just a single can per day.
4 years is impressive. My best streak quitting is about 8 months.

I feel like once your addicted it's a lifetime struggle to kick it.

You know you have been successful quitting when you forget how long it's been since you quit. Also for me it was NOT a lifelong struggle. It's been 17 years and I don't think about it at all anymore. At the time it was one of the hardest things I ever did.  I decided I wanted to be an "old" turkey hunter someday! I think I am getting there LOL.

I'm sure you'd figure something out on that last one. Lol.. I quit Copenhagen for over 6 yrs after over a 30 yr habit, but  then I started up again. Might try quitting again might not. I'm trying to figure out if stress would get me before cancer or cancer before stress. Lol.. It can be done if you want it bad enough, take it a day at a time or minute by minute if u have to. Goodluck!!!

one thing is for sure.. if you live long enough, you're going to get some form of cancer anyway. Dipping certainly isn't good for you.. and can certainly contribute to all kinds of different cancers. But like my doctor said last week..... if I have to have an " addiction".. control me, this is a good one to have in the grand scheme of things.  Still doesn't make it right.. it's just nasty and controlling.  But with smoking it not a question of "if" ... but when it causes problems.  And illegal drugs.. well that is a whole different set of issues.

So much truth in that! What I always hear about is people who have quit smoking and 10 years later get cancer. That makes you wonder- why quit!?

My grandma had quit smoking for 30 years and still got lung cancer.

I quit two months ago.  Chewed for 15 years.  The past ten years, it's been two cans a day.  Copenhagen snuff.  I'm now paying the price at the dentist.

Two months into it, I don't miss it or crave it.  If you can make it two weeks, you'll have 'er done.  The $$$$ I've been saving is incredible.  I can't believe I was spending $350 a month on tobacco.  I should have been buying a new pickup or a $350 gun every month for the past ten years.

I figure I've spent close to $40k on smokeless tobacco and all I have to show for it is stained cavity filled teeth.....that cost even more money to repair.  I've been embarrassed about my teeth ever since I started to chew.

These are Pacific brant.

Went to the dentist yesterday.  Only one or two more visits and then I'll be done.  Most people go twice a year and I go 4 times in three months.  It's not because I don't brush my teeth.  It's because I had a mouthful of copenhagen for 15 years straight.

Quitting is easy. I do it all the time ! I started at a very young age ,grandpa told me it was candy and dont tell your mom. The longest I have quit for is 5 years and for some reason I picked it back up. I have quit a few times since then for a month, three months ,3 days, a week.........Tried meds , that dont work for me makes me crazy. Tried cold turkey, people at work wont talk to me.It's tough. Now my 13 year old son thinks its cool to chew. He runs around with older kids that chew, dad chews, you gotta chew to be a good ole boy....or so he thinks. Its tough.

I tried to quit once. I've been chewing Copenhagen for 18 yrs. I quit at the beginning of this year for three weeks. It was totally brutal. The hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I gave in and have been chewing for a few months again now. I'm going to quit, it's just soooooo hard when I'm in the woods and I don't have a chew in my mouth. I know it's going to catch up with me as far as tooth or gum damage or worse cancer. It's a hard nut to crack.... That's for sure.

Went to the dentist yesterday.  Only one or two more visits and then I'll be done.  Most people go twice a year and I go 4 times in three months.  It's not because I don't brush my teeth.  It's because I had a mouthful of copenhagen for 15 years straight.

I feel ya, I've got a mouth full of fillings, two root canals, and two more caps thanks to cope and skoal. Thing about dip is it has acid in it that eats your teeth, so even if you don't get cancer being worst case scenario, your likely going to have a slew of dental problems.

I wonder if US smokeless will foot my dental bills??

Still not done with the dentist.  Apparently when I did one of my fillings, it was too close to the nerve and it killed the tooth.  Root canal and crown and $1500.  Two Tuesdays from now.

If there are any kids reading this, and by kid I mean 15 or 16 year old's or anyone for that matter that is starting to use smokeless tobacco, I can say that at 31, it has been the biggest, most expensive, most humiliating mistake of my life.  Now I just pray that I don't develop the cancer.

Smokeless tobacco makes you cool until it's a habit.  There is no, "I'll just chew in the blind."  It turns into chewing in the blind and at work only.  Next thing you know, it's in the blind at work and after dinner.  Once you hit that stage, you'll look back and think, how in the hell has it been 15 years already?  Start forking out the cash to get your teeth fixed and hope that is stops at the dentist and not at the radiologist.  I'm lucky.  I'm only missing one tooth....for now.

I wish I would have listened to everyone who told me to stop.  Biggest mistake of my life, hands down.

+1 ... I wish I could go back when I 12 years old.  doesn't take long and you will quickly realize this is just no "habit"...  It's a fully blown addiction.  I dipped for 30 years... every single day for the last 25 years. Just quit 2 weeks ago... been the hardest thing I have ever done but I'm making it.  I learned a lot from my failed attempt to quit a few years back.   If anyone needs support, reach out to me.

Good Job!!!  Hang in there.

I quit when my son was born 25 years ago.  It's definitely worth it.   :icon_thumright:

Congratulations on your new baby! Wish you luck on quitting for good. I have chewed for about 25 years. I'm up to two cans of cope a day and am def thinking of quitting AGAIN soon. I have stopped for as long as two years and went right back to it. It's expensive and stupid but I continue to dip like an idiot. Best of luck!!
