Title: H&R Pardner Pump/Primos Tight Wad shell combo help
Post by: ouachitamtnman on March 24, 2014, 09:38:50 AM
I bought my daughter a 20ga H&R Pardner Pump with a tight wad choke. Patterned it yesterday with cheap winchester #5s at 30yds and it was horrible...Gonna try #6s. Anyone got any suggestions or have any experience with this combination? Thank you

I have the 12 ga pardner pump. And I also put a tight wad on it. I got an awful group. I've got a super full choke with a .665 that I'm gonna try. I was shooting 6s as well but worst case scenario will be going to the longbeards if I can't find the pattern. As far as what my gun smith told me was this was a cheaper 870. Most rem parts are compatible with the gun minus the scope base. That should shed some light for ya even though your using the 20 ga.

Fed #6s ,even the FC would shoot better and even the Fiocchi #7.5 nickel plated lead should give an ample pattern at 30 yards.

The Fed HW #7 load or the H-13 #7 load in HTL will be a much better pattern than the lead 5s.

What looks bad in a 20 ga at 40 may look pretty sweet at 30 and what looks horrible at 30 may look OK at 25 and yes even 5 yards does make a difference  while 10 yds makes a huge difference.

I would next look at another choke if these shells don't work. IF Win comes out with a LB version in 20 gauge with #5 and #6 shot next year a lot of chokes will do if I am assuming correctly. Look at how many different chokes and exit diameters are working for this shell in 12 gauge. :z-twocents:

Those guns have good bores, you probably just need a better choke and smaller shot to get some better patterns. Those barrels are threaded for Win-Choke threads as you know. The very best patterns that I've seen with that gun would be with the SSX and some Hevi-13s with #7 shot or #6 shot but some #6 lead would also work quite well with that combination.

They are good and well made guns. Mine was however pretty packed with grease when it was new. I'd make sure you get that out otherwise down the road you may experience some gunked up problems.

Thanks,
Clark

try the 6's before you go buying more chokes
